The Center today reserved 49.5 percent of the total seats in IITs, IIMs and Central Universities for OBCs, SCs and STs.
At present, 22.5 percent seats are reserved for SCs (15 percent) and STs (7.5 percent) in these institutes. The order to implement the reservation for OBCs will be announced after the elections in five states.
HRD Minister Arjun Singh said, “The Center has taken a decision to implement reservation for OBCs as per the Mandal formula in all Central educational institutions. We are waiting for the elections to be over.”
Asked if IITs and IIMs are part of the decision, he replied, “Yes, they are.” On a question whether he anticipated trouble like the riots during Mandal Commission, Singh said, “We do not want social strife, we will take adequate measures.”
“This was the logical conclusion of the passing of the 104th amendment Bill in the winter session,” he added.
