I have so often heard people extoll the “virtues” and how one should become good as if that is the ultimate goal of the spiritual journey.
I have disagreed.
The reason is that most people steeped in the Vedic/Hindu philosophy keep reading Gita and talking about its philosophy and yet stress on the argument above.
If you were to read Gita – it becomes very clear that Maya – or the Illusion comprises of three gunas – Sattvic, Rajasic and Tamasic. Going beyond Maya is Enlightenment. if that be true then the state of Enlightenment will also be beyond the Sattvic or the good! This quote says it very well!!
And that stands to reason. Because EVEN if you do good you are still bound by its fruits. The goal, however, is to act in a manner that you do not bind yourself in any Karma or fruit or result. This can only happen when you do something.. not because it is “Good” or “Bad” but because it is a duty and without detachment. Then, you tend to go beyond!!
Is it tough? Heck yes! It aint possible until even an iota of ego is in your mind! I have personally seen ONLY one person who came closest to this state – my Grandfather (Mother’s father). His Equanimity and balance was amazing!!
What do you think?
