Pakistani and Indian police are not known for discretion anyways… but there are times when they shock even by their dismal standards!! Here is one such incident from Pakistan.
Some folks, whose relatives had been missing, gathered for a peaceful protest in front of the GHQ of the Police to present a memorandum to the Vice-Chief of the Army Staff (now what is the Vice-Chief of Army doing in the Police offices is a good question!). As the people gathered, to look for answers on their loved ones who were missing – presumably in confines with secret agencies and Army in Pakistan – suddenly saw a contingent of police came along and manhandled them – men, children, women and the old.
As the mishandling occured the protest grew louder and skirmishes occured. One man, Mohammad bin Masood, (son of Masood Janjua) was then stripped of his shalwar and beaten by the police. After dragging him the police shoved him in the police van, his sister protesting and crying!
The police did not even spare the father of a missing person either!
No wonder this has shocked a nation which needs no further shocks from those in uniform. Nevertheless, there are enough people who feel nauseated and ask where is their country going to?
The only difference in India would be that at least there could be a small – very little – hope for the victims in the justice system. At least in one such police beating crime, one court has finally given its verdict – Death Sentence for the culprit police-butchers! Now, before we celebrate, we have to remember that this was just a lower court. It would be justice when the higher court upholds the sentence and provides a precedence that is irrefutably a hope to the poor and victimized! Until then, most poor are on the same level as those in Pakistan!
