Holi was celebrated in Houston. First it was the Arya Samaj temple and then the large gathering in Sugarland, where between 7-10,000 people were present. The show was hosted by Sunil T. of Music Masala. Excellent work, although this Sunil guy does go overboard sometimes. Here is an incident where a white American couple was roped in to first get the holi colors (or "colorize" as Sunil said) and then have a bollywood dance. The audio is a little suspect but the song is "Billo Rani.." And some pictures from the celebration: Read more

The Tao that can be followed is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name. The nameless is the origin or heaven and earth While naming is the origin of the myriad tihngs. Therefore, always desireless, you see the mystery Ever desiring, you see the manifestations. Read more

Sab kuch luta ke hosh mein from the movie "Ek Saal" (1957) sung by Talat Mahmood (Music by Ravi & lyrics by Prem Dhavan) This is a beautiful song with some great advice on ... well.. DECISION MAKING! Making decisions is one of the toughest things for most in the corporate world. People just take forever to make any decision or action. This song does a good job of discussing that in a very interesting way. Although in this song, the context was love and not mere decision making itself. Read more

I had talked about prostitution in an earlier post and how despite its presence and ability to thrive in ever society, everyone has closed their eyes to its inevitability and played a holier-than-thou game only to abuse the women folk more. Netherlands is one country where prostitution is legal and the state charges tax on that "service". I had bought an English translation of Arthashastra (written by Chanakya) by LN Rangarajan. As was expected of a no-nonsense, very pragmatic thinker of that time, Chanakya did not beat around the bush and play games of religion here. He looked at what the reality was and proposed a very realistic solution. Providing sexual entertainment to the public using prostitutes (ganika) was an activity not only strictly controlled by State but also one whic was, for the most part, carried on in state-owned establishments (2.27.1). Women who lived by their beauty (rupajivas) could, however entertain men as independent practitioners (2.27.27); these could have been allowed to practice in smaller places which could not support a full-fledged state establishment. A third type of women of pleasure, mentioned in a few places, is pumsachali, perhaps meaning concubines (3.13.37). Chanakya then went on to further described how the prostitution related establishment would be taxed and maintained. The state enabled the setting up of establishments with lump sum grants of 1000 panas to the head courtesan and 500 panas to her deputy, presumably to enable them to buy jewelry, furnishings, musical instruments, and other tools of their trade (2.27.1). The madam of the establishment has to render full accounts and it was the duty of the Chief Controller of Entertainment to ensure that the net income was not reduced by her extravagance (2.27.10). Independent prostitutes, who were neither given a grant or required to produce detailed accounts, had to pay a tax of one-sixth of their income (2.27.27). Read more

Very nice couplet in Urdu (Sher): Jab tere dard mein dil dukhta tha, Hum tere haq mein dua kartay the. Hum bhi chup chaap phira kartay the, Jab teri dhun mein jiya kartay the (When my heart would hurt with your thought; I would still pray only for you. Would roam around quietly all over; when I used to live in the melody of your memory) Writer Anonymous Read more

Here is an very interesting commentary on non-money and unstructured finance side o fthe economies, specifically the contemporary economic events in the US and India. Please share your thoughts in the comments section below. by Mr. Francis Lobo Mr. Francis Leonard Lobo is a Mechanical Engineer from the University of Poona. His education has been in prestigious institutions in Poona like St. Vincents High School, Ferguson College & College of Engineering. He is also a Life Fellow of Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering & a Member of All India Management Association. He has over 50 years of industry & business experience as a planning engineer, company executive, in-company counselor, company director, mentor, consultant, trainer, & CEO. He has written several books like "Getting Things Done --- Strategies for Success"; "Strategies & Techniques for Successful Selling --- The Sales Mission" etc. 2008 We are in a MONEY CENTRIC ECONOMY --- Everything is measured or attempted to be measured & assessed in money terms. The poor & the weak, even though they have the numbers & the law on their side, are helpless against exploitation & the greed & the self-interests of the rich & the powerful. This is resulting in growing disparities between the rich & the poor. Millions are being cheated out of education & higher education & affordable health care on the plea that these should be privatized & be run like corporations on commercial lines for profit. In 2008 the economy faces the following challenges & opportunities, most of which require us to look at the non-money, unstructured finance space: - The rising value of the rupee - How to utilize the wealth generated by the in-flow of foreign capital into the share market - The globalization of the retail trade & the threats to the livelihood of millions - The energy crisis - Global warming & climate change - The uncertainties & threats posed by terrorism - The challenges to rational thinking & the emergence of the power of religious fundamentalism - The deficiencies in the present form of governance. --- The dependence on the discretionary powers of the bureaucracy. The centralization of power in the hierarchical structure be it in the family, in business or the government. The first-past-the-post system of elections, with all its aberrations, where the swing votes of even small groups can determine who is elected. The slow judicial process resulting in a growing backlog of tens of millions of cases. - The myth of an Ownership Society, where ownership of assets like houses, is based on borrowed money & these assets have to be surrendered or foreclosed if the interest & principal cannot be repaid. This is resulting in Tent People in USA similar to the slum dwellers in India, driven out of their homes & having to live in temporary structures under bridges or in open spaces - The shortage & the rising price of food as land & water required for food production are being diverted to other applications. - Overhanging all this is the possibility of an Economic Recession in USA, with its impact on the Global economy. Read more

What lies beyond can be found only if the mind is still. There may be something or there may be nothing at all. So the only thing that is important is for the mind to be still. Again, if you are concerned with what lies beyond, then you are not looking at what the state of actual stillness is. If stillness to you is only a door to that which lies beyond, then you are not concerned with that door, whereas what is important is the very door itself, the very stillness itself. Therefore you cannot ask what lies beyond. The only thing that is important is for the mind to be still. Read more

You know something is wrong with the polity when the executive is treated like a doormat. And when even the judiciary is thrown out at whims and fancies, then things go really really wrong! But what can you say when the Chief Justice of land's Supreme Court is thrown into a jail WITH family including an 8 year old kid! That is what happened to the last Pakistan Chief Justice Ifthikar Muhammad Chaudhry. He and his family are under house arrest. Even his youngest son of 8 years. Forget his school, the kid cannot even go to the house's yard to play or even the verandah to enjoy the winter sun. What can be worse than that? Read more
