Ok, this is the first time we humans from Earth have sent a space-ship that will go to one cosmic body.... circle it.. stare it.. and then go for another one. True Interplanetary journey! We men have had been practicing this on the women for past few hundred centuries. I am sure we have mastered this act of "checking bodies out" by now!! And if the space ship does get a little "Hot" in the act, let's just say our centuries of practice has made us ready for that experience! So, onwards! Now, don't get me wrong. Its not as if our forays into space have been strictly platonic! We have been checking out various bodies and stuff - like those of planets and asteroids. But never two at one go. Time had come to show the cosmic world our expertise at double dipping. So, while we are at it, it was worth it to have a "go" at two of those curvy creatures! And btw, we can finally use the stuff we learnt from picking up all those UFOs from aliens which they couldn't start to take them back in their haste.... or which crashed because of some error! As they say around the Galaxy, One person's trash is another person's Interplanetary spaceship! Read more

There are few parallels in human endeavor than the very deep and profound argumentative disagreement between Neils Bohr and Albert Einstein on the very nature of Quantum Mechanics. While Bohr was in the Copenhagen Interpretation gang, Einstein was looking for the hidden variables. Einstein wrote a paper with Podolsky and Rosen enunciating the EPR paradox. It was a thought experiment. This is how it is described in wikipedia: The EPR paradox draws on a phenomenon predicted by quantum mechanics, known as quantum entanglement, to show that measurements performed on spatially separated parts of a quantum system can apparently have an instantaneous influence on one another. This effect is now known as "nonlocal behavior" (or colloquially as "quantum weirdness" or "spooky action at a distance"). Read more

Trivia - how far does a two-headed turtle with each face one each side travel? And what is his (their?) speed? Funny huh!! What do you call this? "Revenge of the Hare"? Hehehe Read more

Can one's soul be sold? Well, those who cheat are often accused of that. But here is a guy - Indian Jain - who put his soul up for sale on Ebay. And got a bidder. For $504. Rather cheap soul huh!!? This was his modus operandi of this soul-seller (rhymes with soul-searcher?) I offered to go to a church or temple or mosque saying that I've really never been to any of those places outside my own Jain faith, and I really am curious about what it's like. The auction I put up on eBay said, ”I am an atheist. You can bid on where I go to church or a temple or a mosque, etc.”It came down to Christians bidding that I go to a particular church and atheists bidding that I don't go to church.I work with a college atheist group called the Secular Student Alliance. I didn't want to be put in the position where a Christian with, say, $1 million has the opportunity to win this auction. So [I said] that the money will be donated to the secular group I work with. Read more

Happiness is a state of mind. In the traditional world - it is escape from the unpleasant. Its a race - running faster than the unpleasant can "hit" you! 🙂 So, far men have proved to be faster than women. Over the years, women have progressively become un-happier. They had always assumed that home-making provided unpleasant experiences... so they moved to work-place... guess what? That was worse!! But I guess since men were ahead on the curve.. they started managing things in a way that could lead them away from the unpleasant and make them happier! Read more

Ok, while the Americans are busy fretting their health-care plans.. it might be time better for the rest of the world citizens to think of "Boat-care plans"! For the world is soon going to get watery. Glaciers are melting, the ice on mountains and poles are breaking up - much faster than those science jokers thought a few years back (well, few = 5 in these times!). So, either learn swimming or buy a good boat or a life-jacket. That may be the best insurance plan! Read what National Geographic says: Read more

I haven't been on one recently, but I am assuming that a space flight is a tough experience! Heck, the microbes - those with small robes.. naah... the small guys who only show up under a microscope - have it really tough out there!! So tough they become tougher.... and meaner!! They kill stuff faster and become worse in small quantities! Scientists found Salmonella did kill more mice than their earth resident counterpart for the duration of the journey! So, caveat - if you do go up to space - don't sit next to a salmonella. He may not be the best of friends... 😉 Read more

God is a matter of faith. Faith that things "work" even though in a manner not always according to our wishes and "equitably" (as we define the word). Yet, it seems to be so. Random world would leave no room for any hope. No reason to do anything or make an effort. Faith, that there is a reason, gives us life. This reason of why things work (given the assumption, based on faith, that they work) is a mystery. And one that has been unsolved. This reason, we all call God. So lets look at it again: We have faith that there is a "reason" in the world, called God. And because we believe the world has a reason, we believe that there is a "God". See the circular logic? Read more

A new study says that multiple universes exist, as has been postulated by the "Many Worlds theory" of Quantum Mechanics. So, every time a physical possibility is explored - the Universe "splits" - thus creating many alternative outcomes. As if once a move is made on a chess board - then all the possible games are automatically played in the multiple-Universe (multi-verses??) by the same players! Here are the details: Parallel universes really do exist, according to a mathematical discovery by Oxford scientists described by one expert as "one of the most important developments in the history of science".The parallel universe theory, first proposed in 1950 by the US physicist Hugh Everett, helps explain mysteries of quantum mechanics that have baffled scientists for decades, it is claimed. In Everett's "many worlds" universe, every time a new physical possibility is explored, the universe splits. Given a number of possible alternative outcomes, each one is played out - in its own universe.A motorist who has a near miss, for instance, might feel relieved at his lucky escape. But in a parallel universe, another version of the same driver will have been killed. Yet another universe will see the motorist recover after treatment in hospital. The number of alternative scenarios is endless. Read more

War is a strange situation. Both sides kill and both fight. Strangely, both feel their rationale is justified. IN 1857, the First War of Indian Independence was fought. At that time the Indian sepoys rose up against their British Masters and fought for freedom. Some Brits were killed and after the Indian contingent lost the war, many of the Indians were tortured and killed! Now, some Brits are in India to pay homage to the British soldiers who died in that war. Indians are mad - specifically the BJP. Is it insensitive of these visitors - HECK yes! It is as if a group of Germans went to Paris to pay homage to Nazis killed in the war with France! Well, someone died in that war too. Is it good or bad to pay homage in a place where the citizens were tortured and treated sub-humanely? Read more
