Why “Never Enough” Resonates with So Many

Why “Never Enough” Resonates with So Many 2018-02-07T13:59:18-04:00

If you haven’t seen The Greatest Showman, you should. The 2017 release was inspired by P.T. Barnum, and it is remarkable. One of the songs even won a Golden Globe. While I love that song, it wasn’t my favorite. No – for me, that honor goes to Never Enough.

When you listen past the beautiful music and voice, and pay attention to the lyrics, you might start to wonder about the meaning behind the song. Essentially, the song is saying that no amount of fame, glory, or honor will ever be enough. P.T. Barnum felt that way. Many of us do. And there’s a reason for that. You see, we so often chase after what the world offers and when we do that…well, nothing will ever be enough.

I recall first learning this lesson from a gal sharing her testimony at a Campus Outreach while in college. I’ll never forget her sharing her drive to find the next big thrill. Scuba diving, bungee jumping, sky diving. She was an adrenaline junkie. Yet, it was never enough for her. She wanted more out of life, but couldn’t figure out what the “more” was. Until someone introduced her to Jesus Christ.

John 10:10 tells us that Jesus came to give abundant, full, satisfying life. When we pursue anything other than our relationship with Jesus and what He wants for us, we will never be satisfied. Nothing will ever be enough. We won’t have enough attention, love, or happiness. Our bank accounts will never be big enough and our list of accolades will never be long enough. Because unless we are in the will of the God who created us, all of our searching will be for naught. We can spend our entire lives searching, but won’t ever find what we think we are looking for. We certainly see that in Hollywood with the rampant rates of addiction, promiscuity, and suicide. But this doesn’t just affect the rich and famous – it impacts all of us. But the truth is that we can trust that we are enough to God, and He is more than enough for us.
