Faith and Personal Experiences in the Beauty Industry

Dr. TAS: What personal experiences or beliefs have had the most profound impact on your professional journey?

Losing both parents within nine months reshaped my life and ignited my determination to honor their legacy. In my grief, I received a partial scholarship to study in the U.S., which was an unexpected lifeline. I packed my suitcase with $20 and hope, chasing a better future.

As a Jamaican student, I completed college in three years despite financial struggles, often working late into the night. However, my true passion lay in beauty, a field I explored through books, magazines, and YouTube tutorials. After trying roles in banking and telecommunications, I followed my heart to the beauty industry.

A transformative spiritual encounter also shaped my journey. During a prayerful moment, I felt God call me to empower others through beauty. That experience gave me clarity and purpose, inspiring me to open The Fab Institute of Beauty to train the next generation of beauty professionals.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5 NIV) became my guiding scripture. It reminds me to rely on God in every step of my journey.

How Faith Shapes Business Challenges

Dr. TAS: How has your faith or spiritual outlook shaped the way you approach challenges in your industry?

Faith transformed my perspective. Hairstyling and makeup became ministries tools to uplift others. My Christian values taught me to see clients as individuals worthy of love and respect, creating a welcoming environment for all.

Biblical principles guide my leadership at The Fab Institute of Beauty. I emphasize integrity, self-worth, and inner beauty. Clients and students alike hear my message: “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised” (Proverbs 31:30).

My faith also gives me strength in tough situations. Whether managing client expectations or industry pressures, I approach each challenge with grace, leaning on prayer for guidance. Opening the beauty school allowed me to combine technical training with values of kindness and service, creating a supportive environment for students.

Spiritual Clarity in Defining a Purposeful Career

Dr. TAS: Can you share a moment when spirituality or personal beliefs provided clarity or direction in your career?

At 36, I took a leap of faith to attend beauty school. Despite challenges, I opened a salon immediately after graduation, relying on prayer to navigate uncertainties. After seven fulfilling years, I felt called to transition from running a salon to training others.

The decision to close my salon and open a beauty school wasn’t easy, but it felt divinely guided. The Fab Institute of Beauty allows me to empower aspiring professionals while integrating values like integrity and compassion into their training. This new chapter reflects God’s blueprint for my life.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV). This scripture reassures me during moments of doubt.

Balancing Faith and Professional Demands

Dr. TAS: How do you balance your personal beliefs with the demands and ethics of your field?

My Christian beliefs are my moral compass. In a trend-driven industry, I prioritize authenticity and kindness. Prayer helps me align my decisions with my values, ensuring I empower others rather than conform to superficial standards.

I foster community among like-minded professionals, emphasizing collaboration over competition. This approach not only aligns with my values but also creates a supportive network for navigating ethical challenges.

Mindfulness also helps me balance the industry’s pace. Staying grounded allows me to respond thoughtfully, reinforcing patience and compassion. By integrating faith into my work, I create experiences that uplift clients and remain true to my purpose.

Advice for Connecting Faith and Work

Dr. TAS: What advice would you give to someone in your industry struggling to connect their faith with their professional life?

Start each day with prayer. Seek guidance for your work and align your actions with your faith. Matthew 6:33 NIV reminds us: “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Find a supportive community of faith-based professionals. Collaboration, not competition, fosters growth and connection. Look for ways to reflect your values in your work, uplifting clients, sharing encouragement, or creating a welcoming space. For example, I used to offer free makeovers for cancer patients and free makeovers for the depressed.

Remember that your career can be a ministry. By prioritizing authenticity and kindness, you can make a meaningful impact while staying true to your beliefs.

Spirituality’s Future in the Beauty Industry

Dr. TAS: How do you see the role of spirituality evolving in your field, and what impact might it have on future leaders?

I believe spirituality can transform the beauty industry. Leaders who embrace faith prioritize compassion, collaboration, and integrity, creating a culture that uplifts everyone involved.

Future leaders will likely focus on holistic approaches, considering the emotional and spiritual well-being of clients and employees. This shift fosters deeper connections and a sense of purpose in professional relationships.

Spirituality encourages us to align our work with God’s plan, inspiring resilience and clarity. By integrating these values, the next generation of beauty professionals can lead with authenticity and create environments that reflect love and kindness.
