Personal Beliefs Shaping a Professional Path

Dr. TAS: What personal experiences or beliefs have had the most impact on your professional journey?

Tenyeka: My journey in mental health began with a deeply personal loss. The passing of my son on Christmas Eve in 2005. That loss motivated me to help others as they navigate their own paths of grief and resilience. “I grieve how I believe,” knowing God will one day reconnect our spirits. My work is now focused on providing guidance for others, helping them move through even the darkest moments of life. My faith gives me the strength to walk alongside them in their pain, and my experience helps me connect with clients in a way that’s honest and heartfelt.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”Psalm 34:18 ESV

Psalm 34:18 is a beautiful reminder that God stays near in our hardest times, bringing comfort to those who are hurting.

Building Compassion and Resilience Through Faith in Counseling

Dr. TAS: How has your faith shaped your approach to challenges in the mental health field?

Tenyeka: My faith provides the stability I need to serve others. In a profession where empathy and resilience are essential, my relationship with God strengthens me. Knowing He is with me gives me the courage to support others, especially when clients are going through difficult seasons. My faith reminds me to approach each situation with compassion and balance, creating a safe, nurturing space for others to explore their journeys. When I lean on God, I am able to stay rooted, present, and able to help clients with a clear heart.

“The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace.”Psalm 29:11 NIV

This verse reminds me that God grants peace and strength, qualities essential in overcoming life’s challenges and offering compassionate counseling. As my faith strengthens my approach to client care, it also provides spiritual clarity a vital component in my work and personal journey.

Gaining Spiritual Clarity in Christian Mental Health Counseling

Dr. TAS: Can you share a time when spirituality provided clarity in your career?

Tenyeka: Many times, I have felt the desire to walk away from difficult moments in my career. But every time, God led me back to those opportunities, showing me the importance of connecting with others. My journey isn’t just for me; it’s meant to help others, to use my story as a tool for healing and clarity. Every interaction serves as a reminder that my work has a greater purpose, rooted in faith and service.

Knowing that God supports me reminds me to trust the path He’s set out, helping me approach each person with compassion. Maintaining spiritual clarity is essential, especially in today’s fast-paced world, where grounding in faith can help us stay focused on what matters.

Spiritual Grounding in a Fast-Paced World

Dr. TAS: What role do faith and mindfulness play in today’s busy world?

Tenyeka: In a fast-paced society, mindfulness and faith are essential. Beginning my day with prayer keeps me focused and grounded. The pressures of the world can easily overwhelm, but connecting to my faith daily brings balance and clarity. Spiritual practices, like church, prayer, and Bible study, help me detach from the demands around me, allowing me to reconnect with what truly matters. This grounding helps me handle each day with calm, clarity, and purpose. By staying intentional in my spiritual practices, I am better equipped to serve others and remain focused on my mission.

“Be still, and know that I am God.”Psalm 46:10 KJV

Psalm 46:10 encourages me to pause, reconnect, and find peace in God’s presence, no matter how busy life becomes.

Balancing Personal Faith and Professional Ethics

Dr. TAS: How do you balance your personal beliefs with professional ethics?

Tenyeka: In my work, I approach each situation professionally and respectfully. While my faith guides me, I respect each client’s unique journey. Mental health is deeply personal, and my role is to honor each person’s beliefs without imposing my own. If a client shows interest, I’m open to discussing spirituality. However, I remain focused on supporting them in their individual paths. My faith strengthens me, but I ensure my work is always aligned with the values and goals of those I serve.

Daily Practices for Staying Grounded in Faith

Dr. TAS: Are there spiritual practices you rely on daily to stay focused?

Tenyeka: Through faith-based mental health practices like prayer and Bible study, I stay grounded and connected to my purpose. By nurturing my spiritual life, I’m better prepared to meet the needs of my clients. My faith practices remind me of why I do what I do and help me stay grounded in the values that guide my work. Staying close to God in these ways allows me to serve others from a place of strength and compassion.

Advice for Balancing Faith and Career in Mental Health

Dr. TAS: What advice would you give someone struggling to connect faith with their career?

Tenyeka: I would encourage them to reflect on their faith and purpose. How does their faith positively impact their work? Staying true to their values, without imposing them on others, can make a meaningful difference. When someone knows their purpose and remains connected to their faith, they can bring an authentic and compassionate presence to their career. Balancing faith and work isn’t always easy, but it brings a deeper sense of fulfillment and helps create meaningful connections.

Evolving Role of Spirituality in Mental Health

Dr. TAS: How do you see spirituality evolving in your field?

Tenyeka: Spirituality is becoming more openly recognized as people look for purpose and grounding. Future leaders will see the value of spirituality as part of holistic care, recognizing that mental health involves mind, body, and spirit. By addressing clients’ spiritual needs, leaders can foster empathy, resilience, and authenticity. Embracing spirituality in mental health allows us to support others in a way that respects all aspects of their lives, leading to a more compassionate approach in the field.

Wisdom from the Story of Job

Dr. TAS: If you could receive personal or professional advice from any biblical figure, whom would you choose and why? What specific guidance or wisdom would you hope to gain from them?

Tenyeka: I would choose Job, as his story resonates deeply with me. Like Job, I’ve experienced moments where I felt like I lost everything. Job was set apart by God to endure unimaginable suffering, yet he remained unwavering in faith. He had moments of frustration, anger, and grief—emotions that remind us of his humanity. Job’s resilience through his hardships teaches me the importance of trusting God through trials and accepting that it’s okay to process our emotions without letting them shake our faith in Him. I would seek Job’s wisdom on finding hope and strength in the face of life’s greatest losses, knowing that such faithfulness leads to spiritual growth and renewal.

“Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him…”Job 13:15 KJV

Job’s story illustrates that unwavering faith through life’s trials can deepen our relationship with God and bring us closer to His wisdom.
