Christmas is my favorite time of the year not because of the lights or presents, but because it’s about Jesus. Without Him, my life would feel like a lost balloon drifting farther and farther away. Jesus is my light, my hope, and my lifeline. He reminds me that I’m never alone.
This season is all about keeping Christ in Christmas. Jesus isn’t just part of the holiday; He is the reason we celebrate. His love is the light that fills the darkest corners of our hearts and the world. Let’s explore how we can make Him the center of this beautiful season and keep Him close in our hearts.

A Brief History of Christmas
When we think about Christmas, it’s easy to picture decorations, gifts, and joyful songs. But did you know that Christmas began as a way to celebrate Jesus as the light of the world? The early Church chose December 25th to replace pagan festivals like Saturnalia. They wanted to proclaim that Jesus brings hope and light into the darkness.
John 8:12 ESV says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” This verse reminds us that Christmas isn’t just a time for festivities; it’s a celebration of the true light Jesus Christ.
As we hang our Christmas lights, let’s remember the history behind this holiday and how Jesus’ light changes everything.
Why Is Christmas Celebrated on December 25th?
The Bible doesn’t tell us the exact day Jesus was born. So why December 25th? The early Christians chose this date to replace celebrations of the winter solstice, symbolizing Jesus as the true light that overcomes darkness.
This makes me think of how Jesus lights up the dark places in my heart. Before I knew Him, life often felt scary and uncertain. But Jesus came to bring peace and hope, just as He brings light to the world.
John 1:9 ESV tells us, “The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.” No matter the date, what matters most is that Jesus came for us.
How Do Christians Celebrate Christmas?
There are so many ways to keep Christ in Christmas. These traditions help us remember why we celebrate:
- Worship Together: Going to church on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day is one of my favorite ways to celebrate. Hearing the story of Jesus’ birth and singing hymns fills my heart with joy.
- Set Up a Nativity Scene: Seeing the manger reminds me of Jesus’ humble beginning and His incredible love for us.
- Acts of Kindness: Whether it’s donating to a food pantry, helping a neighbor, or comforting a friend, showing kindness is a way to reflect Jesus’ love.
- Reading the Nativity Story: I love reading Luke 2:1-20 GNT and Matthew 1:18-25 GNT. It’s like stepping into that holy night when Jesus was born.
- Praying Together: We take time to thank God for sending Jesus into our lives.
These practices help us slow down and focus on the real meaning of Christmas, which is Jesus.

The Birth of Christ: God’s Promise Fulfilled
Christmas is all about God’s promises. Long before Jesus was born, the Bible foretold His coming. Isaiah 7:14 NIV says, “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” Immanuel means “God with us.”
Luke 2:11 ESV captures the moment this promise was fulfilled: “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” Jesus didn’t come to live in luxury or rule with power. He came as a humble baby to show us God’s love and save us from sin.
Every time I think about this promise, my heart feels full. Christmas reminds me that God always keeps His word, and His love never fails.
Keeping Christ in Christmas: The True Light
I love looking at Christmas lights twinkling on trees and houses. But as beautiful as they are, they can’t compare to the light of Jesus.
In John 8:12 ESV, Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” His light guides us, comforts us, and gives us hope when life feels overwhelming.
The star of Bethlehem reminds us of this light. Just as it led the Wise Men to Jesus, His light leads us to Him. This Christmas, let’s focus on reflecting His light through our words and actions.

The Message of Humility and Love
When I think about Jesus’ birth in a manger, I’m amazed at His humility. He could have come as a powerful king, but He chose to be born in the simplest way.
Philippians 2:7 NIV says, “He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” Jesus’ humility shows us the true meaning of Christmas love, compassion, and selflessness.
We can honor His example by serving others. Maybe it’s helping someone carry groceries, sharing a meal, or simply offering a kind word. Every small act of love reflects Jesus’ heart.
The Gift of Salvation
Christmas is a time for giving and receiving gifts, but the greatest gift of all is Jesus. John 3:16 ESV says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Jesus is the reason we celebrate. He came to rescue us and give us eternal life. This gift is free, and all we have to do is accept it.
If you haven’t received Jesus as your Savior, Christmas is the perfect time to say yes to Him.
Keeping Christ in Christmas
With all the busyness of the season, it’s easy to forget why we celebrate. Here are a few ways to keep Christ at the center:
- Pray Daily: Spend time thanking Jesus for coming into the world and into your life.
- Serve Others: Find ways to show kindness and share His love.
- Invite Friends to Church: Share the joy of Christmas by inviting someone to hear the story of Jesus’ birth.
- Pause and Reflect: Take moments to sit quietly, read Scripture, and think about the miracle of Jesus’ coming.

Without Jesus, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas. Isaiah 9:6 ESV reminds us, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Jesus is my Wonderful Counselor when I feel confused, my Mighty God when I feel weak, and my Prince of Peace when I feel afraid. He is the reason my heart is full, not just at Christmas but every day.
