Ryan Coogler: Academy Award Nominee

A Popular Name in the Entertainment Industry

Ryan Coogler is a name movie attenders know well. His popularity stems from his efforts in the entertainment industry. In fact, viewers of the 98th Academy Awards will hear the host mention his name many times throughout the night. This is because he is an award nominee in several categories. In celebration of this awards show, I’ll highlight Ryan Coogler’s background, his film-directing resume, and other passions.  I’ll also explain how his faith in Jesus Christ is foundational for every aspect of his life.

Ryan Coogler, An Oakland, California Native

Influential Parents

Ryan Coogler was born on May 18, 1986, in Oakland, California, to Ira and Joselyn Coogler. Along with Ryan, the married couple is also the parents of Noan and Keenan Coogler.

The couple began dating while students at California State University, Hayward, and have been playing an influential role in Ryan’s life since his birth. Their influence manifests through Ryan’s love for film.

He credits his love for movies to his mother, whom he calls a cinephile who’ll watch any movie. In fact, watching movies became the Coogler family’s favorite pastime

Ryan’s parents used movies to teach their sons about the realities of life and expose them to positive examples of African Americans. Interestingly, Ira Coogler even used films to learn more about fatherhood since he lost his father and father-in-law in his early twenties.

This coping mechanism compelled the young father to show Ryan movies like Boyz N the Hood and Malcolm X when Ryan was a young child. While these movies were age-appropriate for Ryan, Ira was introducing him to a craft that would later help him fulfill his purpose.

Along with taking Ryan to the movies, Ira also began taking him to his job at the San Francisco Juvenile Justice System. Ryan would later use this experience as inspiration for his first feature film, Fruitvale Station.

Similarly, Ryan would use Joselyn’s role as a community organizer as a source of inspiration for early scenes in Black Panther.

But how does a young man from a movie-loving, Oakland family become a film-maker for hits like Black Panther? You may be surprised to know that Ryan’s journey to filmmaking is intertwined with sports. Ryan grew up a fan of local sports teams in the Oakland area and began playing football in high school. This allowed him to play against Oakland native and former Seattle Seahawks star running back Marshawn Lynch.

Ryan played one season at Mount Saint Mary’s College before the program ended. While there, he took a creative writing class and wrote a story about how his father almost died in his arms. The story is so powerful that his professor encourages him to pursue filmmaking as a career to reach people.

While Ryan appreciated the encouragement, he procrastinated completing his film school application, wanting to focus on football

Since Mount Saint Mary’s no longer had a football program, Ryan decided to transfer to Sacramento State University. In an interview with 7 PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony, Ryan describes the offseason before his senior year at the school as a turning point in his life. The turning point comes as Ryan breaks his jaw during a 7-on-7  drill during summer workouts.

Though the injury was unfortunate, it’s proof that we make plans, but God establishes our steps. Ryan realizes this as the inability to compete prompts him to complete his film school application.

Ryan Coogler Finds True Love

Along with deciding to pursue filmmaking as a career, college is also a turning point in Ryan’s life as he finds true love. Ryan met his true love, Zinzi, in high school, but they didn’t become a couple until college.

Zinzi proved her devotion to Ryan by purchasing him screenwriting software. Little did she know this investment would be the beginning of a dynamic partnership as she works with and advises Ryan on all of his films.

Her character models Proverbs 31 as Ryan has full confidence in her and lacks nothing with Zinzi by his side.  She is also the model Proverbs 31 woman, being an attentive mother to the couple’s two children.

Film-Making Resume & Accolades

Providing for his children is made possible due to Ryan’s success as a filmmaker. Since 2013, Ryan has produced five feature films that have helped him become the icon he is today. Ryan’s feature films are

  1. Fruitvale Station (2013)
  2. Creed (2015)
  3. Black Panther (2018).
  4. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022).
  5. Sinners (2025).

Sinners is the fifth-highest-grossing horror film of all time, with $369,189,632 worldwide. Sinners is also the most-nominated film in Oscars history, with 16 nominations.

Along with a historic nomination record, Ryan also has 114 award wins and 166 nominations. Some of Ryan’s wins include

  1. 2026 Critics’ Choice Award for Best Original Screenplay (Sinners).
  2. 2022 Hollywood Music In Media Awards (HMMA)

  4. 2015 AAFCA Award for Best Director (Creed).
  5. 2013 Traverse City Film Festival Best American Film Award Winner (Fruitvale Station).

  • Judas and the Black Messiah
  • Space Jam: A New Legacy
  • Stephen Curry Undefeated
  • Wakanda Forever: The Official Black Panther Podcast

Ryan Coogler Infuses Faith and Activism with Movies

Ryan Coogler Finds Inspiration Amid Tragedy

While films like Wakanda Forever have brought Ryan much success, his work ethic doesn’t exempt him from tragedy. Ryan first realized this in 2015 after losing his Great Uncle James Amision in 2015. Ryan still wrestles with the regret of not being more present during the months leading up to James’ death.

Consequently, Ryan chose to pay homage to his great uncle through the movie Sinners. The movie is in Mississippi, where his great uncle James and much of his family roots derive. He also honors his great uncle by making Delta Blues music a major part of the film.

His great uncle loved to listen to Delta Blues music, which some say is a close cousin of Gospel music. But where Gospel uplifts the soul, Delta Blues finds beauty in the flesh and spirit, edifying all aspects of the human experience.

This allows Ryan to tap into his knowledge about African spirituality by highlighting a blues subgenre that mentions being haunted by poor choices and communicating with the dead.

Additionally, Sinners acknowledges Ryan’s Baptist upbringing and Catholic school education. This is seen as the title symbolizes the Christian teaching that we are all sinners. As such, we should follow Jesus’ advice and address the planks in our eyes before judging the specks in others.

Activism in Fruitvale Station and Black Panther

Along with incorporating faith through content that teaches us not to be judgmental, Ryan’s films also incorporate necessary forms of activism. Scripture urges readers to give justice to the poor and orphan, uphold the rights of the oppressed, and deliver them from evil.

Ryan gives justice to the oppressed through Fruitvale Station, which tells the true story of Oscar Grant III. Oscar was unjustly killed by police in Oakland, California, on New Year’s Day 2009.

Fruitvale Station’s release in 2013 served as an eerie foreshadowing of an ever-occurring reality in the Black community. I say this because between 2014 and 2022, there were fourteen publicized unjust police brutality-related deaths among citizens from Black and Brown communities. This means Ryan used the movie to introduce audiences from all ethic backgrounds to a reality many try to ignore.

While Ryan boldly confronts the travesty of police brutality, he also includes activism through his content in subtle ways. His film Black Panther pays homage to the Black Panther Party by shooting the opening scene in Oakland, California.

Similarly, Ryan says he produced Black Panther to present the uplifting depictions of Black and African communities he wishes to see. It’s visual faith like Ryan’s that will stop the Black community from perishing under the strongholds of racism, as well as external and self-inflicted violence that plagues us.

Encouraging Ryan Coogler

Ryan is intentional about using his craft to uplift the Black community and every viewer who watches his films. His intentionality is a huge reason why he’s successful.

Yet with all his success, Ryan struggles with the idea of longevity in his career and life. His concerns are valid, as he grew up in a city where many Black men have died at a young age. He’s also seen famous Black men like Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman die young.

Furthermore, he knows many highly acclaimed individuals who rose to fame and then fell from it. But Ryan’s fears (while valid) don’t have to become his fate.

As a man of faith, I encourage him to meditate on the Book of Proverbs frequently. Doing so will help him embrace God’s promise of longevity to those who obey his commands. He’ll also gain the wisdom necessary to continue in the film industry by making wise choices.

Proverbs also says that those who are loving, faithful, and humble will gain favor with God and people. As Ryan continues to align with his faith in God, he’ll obtain the favor that allows him to leave a lasting legacy whenever he transitions from this life.

I encourage him to continue cultivating key relationships in his life, as he has with Zinzi, Michael B. Jordan, and Sev Ohanian. These individuals can serve as wise counsel and genuine friends who help him navigate the challenges of being a famous film director.

Lastly, I encourage him to keep making coffee for his film cast and being a servant leader to them. Such a display of humility will show young actors and actresses how to respect everyone they work with.
