Karl-Anthony Towns & The New York Knicks

Preparing for the NBA Finals

Karl-Anthony Towns and the New York Knicks are atop the sports media news cycle these days. The reason is that they currently have a 12-2 record in the 2026 National Basketball Association (NBA) playoffs.

They are preparing for the NBA Finals after sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers 4-0 to win the Eastern Conference Finals (ECF). While this is quite the feat, the journey to competing for a championship hasn’t been easy for Karl-Anthony Towns.

Below, you’ll learn about Karl’s background, how he became passionate about basketball, and his faith in Jesus Christ. You’ll also learn how his faith sustains him through professional challenges and personal trials.

A Jersey Kid with a Dominican Heritage

Karl-Anthony Towns Influential Parents

Karl-Anthony Towns, “KAT,” was born on November 15, 1995, in Edison, New Jersey. Though born and raised in New Jersey, Karl is a Dominican American.

Karl’s ethnic heritage comes from his mother, Jacqueline-Cruz Towns, a native of the Dominican Republic. Jacquline is also responsible for Karl’s name, adding Anthony to his first name so he wouldn’t be known as Jr.

During Karl’s childhood, she worked as a nurse in a mental health hospital. Karl considers her a major influence in his basketball, helping him stay motivated and disciplined in high school.

His father, Karl Towns Sr., is also a major influence because of KAT’s basketball success. Towns Sr. played basketball at Monmouth University and was a coach for Piscataway Technical High School.

Therefore, Towns Sr. coaches and models Proverbs 22:6 by training him in the sport that’d become his career. Towns Sr. even invests in his son, using his savings to build a basketball hoop for KAT so KAT could practice.

Along with investing in KAT’s hoop dreams, Towns Sr and Jacqueline also mold their son spiritually, raising him as a Jehovah’s Witness. Their investment paid off as Karl began developing his faith after being exposed to Seventh-day Adventist and Catholic teachings.

This exposure comes from attending faith-based grade schools and high schools. Through this foundation, he learns to find inspiration through Philippians 4:13, his favorite scripture.

Philippians 4:13 is also the verse that keeps him anchored in Jesus Christ through life’s trials and triumphs.

Professional & International Stats

After an outstanding season at Kentucky, Karl declares for the NBA Draft. He makes a wise decision as the Minnesota Timberwolves select him with the first overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.

Karl made an immediate impact as a six-time Rookie of the Month and 2015-16 Rookie of the Year. He also becomes a four-time NBA All-Star and the 2022 NBA 3 Point Contest Champion.

Additionally, he’s also the first player in NBA history with ten 2 pointers, ten three pointers, and ten free throws in a single game.

Furthermore, in nine seasons with the T-wolves, Karl acquired the following stats through 573 regular-season games

  • 13,121 points.
  • 6,216 rebounds.
  • 1,815 assists.
  • 721 blocks.

While Karl plays well with the T-Wolves, the organization trades him to the New York Knicks in 2024. The Knicks center has appeared in two NBA All-Star Games,  two ECF’s, and will play in tonight’s NBA Finals.

Consequently, through 147 regular-season games, he’s acquired

  • 58 points.
  • 23 rebounds.
  • 6 assists.
  • 2 blocks.
  • 88.9% freethrow percentage.
  • 40% field goal percentage.

Trials, Tragedies & Love

Karl-Anthony Towns Basketball Shortcomings

Despite having successful individual numbers at every level, there are three ways Karl-Anthony Towns has fallen short on the basketball court. First, he’s yet to lead the Dominican Republic to its first Olympic Games appearance.

Second, he’s yet to win an NBA Finals, even though he’s made the NBA Conference Finals multiple times. Unfortunately,  overcoming this hurdle is more challenging due to significant injuries.

Third, he lost in the NCAA Tournament Championship game, despite entering the contest with a 38-0 record.

Karl regards this loss as one of the toughest losses he’s experienced because he let his family down. He believes winning a championship would’ve been a great way to repay the sacrifices and investments loved ones have made.

Despite the loss, I believe Karl uses Philippians 4:13 as motivation to continue competing, trusting that God will be glorified through his journey.

A Devastating Storm Called COVID-19

Sadly, another way God strengthened and received glory through KAT’s life is through a storm called COVID-19.

In the spring of 2020, the strong winds of a global pandemic came blowing into KAT’s life. Both he and his parents had severe bouts with COVID-19. While KAT and his father recover, Jacqueline succumbs to the disease on April 13, 2020.

In interviews after her death, KAT mentions how her absence makes success less important because he wanted to make her smile. He also mentions how he’s lost his joy and how her death put him in a dark space.

One could call Covid-19 Karl’s job experience because he’s lost several other family members to the virus. That said, he’s learned (and perhaps still learning) how to suffer well and be content

Contentment while suffering is the core message behind Paul’s use of Philippians 4:13. I mention this not to say that Karl is excited about having to endure such tragedy.

Instead, he’s found a way to be honest about his feelings. As an advocate for mental health, he encourages people to talk to a therapist because he knows it’s beneficial to their well-being.

That said, in the year following this tragedy, he’s admitted he’s yet to receive counseling because he’s not ready.  Karl’s honesty shows other males that it’s ok not to rush into therapy because everyone deals with grief differently. But my hope during Men’s Mental Health Month is that Karl and others begin receiving the counseling they need.

Karl-Anthony Towns Finds Ways to Love After Heartbreak

God is a comforter who comforts the broken-hearted. One way God comforts believers through grief is through people. KAT can attest to this after he and his fiancée, Jordyn Woods, began bonding over losing a parent.

KAT speaks highly of Jordy, saying God placed her in his life to replenish the present love his mother can no longer provide. He also mentions that her presence helps him stay grounded. Jordyn is truly KAT’s “good thing” and proof that he’s found favor with the Lord.

Not only does KAT experience God’s love and favor through his fiancée, but he also reciprocates it by serving the needy. KAT follows James 2:14-17 by applying good deeds to his faith, like

  • Advocating for social justice causes in Minnesota.
  • Being a key part of the NBA and NBPA Pioneers campaign, which honors the league’s first Black players.
  • Giving away 500 coats to families in New York during a coat drive.
  • Helping secure $3 million to build a state-of-the-art basketball facility for youth in the Dominican Republic with Go Ministries.

The league recognized KAT’s community efforts by giving him the NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award twice. He’s also the 2023-2024 Kareem Abdul Jabbar Social Justice Champion.

KAT’s example shows that when your faith is anchored in Jesus Christ, you can bear others’ burdens while enduring trials. KAT’s example also shows that Christ can sustain, transform, and renew you after a tragedy.

I’m excited to see how KAT will use his faith and the memory of his loved ones as motivation during the 2026 NBA Finals.
