Global Bible Month
Rejoicing in God’s Word
Global Bible Month is an opportunity to rejoice about studying God’s word in a season that emphasizes thankfulness. This is because over 1 billion people have downloaded the YouVersion Bible App since its creation in 2007.
Consequently, users can conveniently engage with the Bible, allowing them to grow spiritually and find answers to difficult questions.
In recognition of this virtual engagement, I will highlight the celebration for reaching over 1 billion users. Then I’ll discuss how the YouVersion Bible App was invented, acknowledge its inventor, and offer an insightful critique.
Celebrating Global Bible Month
YouVersion Reaches over 1 Billion Users
On Monday, November 17, 2025, believers worldwide celebrated Global Bible Month. Global Bible Month celebrates the fact that YouVersion has reached over 1 billion downloads since its inception in 2007. This milestone is significant because it means 1 billion people have read a digital version of the Bible.
The Beyond a Billion celebration took place at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. While thousands were present at the Paycom Center, millions more enjoyed the festivities through the YouVersion live stream.
This occasion was more than an ordinary worship service; it was a time of thanksgiving and praise to God for blessing us with the Bible. Psalm 119:35, “make me to walk in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.”
Delight was shown during the celebration as several artists, including Matt Redman, sang songs of adoration and praise to the Lord. A spoken word artist even poetically highlighted the importance of scripture through two separate performances.
Rapper KB and Sadie Robertson Huff also gave brief testimonies about one specific verse that helps them remain grounded in their faith.
Sadie mentions how Exodus 3:14-15 reminds her to trust in God as the I Am when she feels inadequate to do what He asks of her. Similarly, KB says Psalms 73:25 reminds him that success doesn’t come from money or career accolades but from God.
Furthermore, a single mother testifies that the Bible app helps her autistic son learn scripture and trust in God. Her son brought a sweet moment to an already glorious occasion, talking about how everyone needs Jesus’ love.
Who is Bobby Grunewald?
Bible App & Global Bible Month Creator
This glorious occasion wouldn’t be possible without Bobby Grunewald. He is the creator of the YouVersion Bible app. During the Global Bible Month celebration, he mentions how the initial idea to create a digital version of the Bible came while waiting in line at the airport in 2006.
The idea stems from his desire to read God’s word consistently and a curiosity about how technology could help him achieve this goal. He began bringing this thought into reality by taking a small step of faith to register the YouVersion name for a website in 2007. This step of faith began a tedious process of finding developers, no financial support, and challenges getting permission to post the Bible on the site.
Unfortunately, the website was a failure. One reason for this shortcoming is that people were not accustomed to having a digital version of the Bible with them everywhere they go.
That said, Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that “in their hearts humans plan their course, but God establishes their steps.”
God establishes Bobby’s steps by giving him the wisdom to turn a failing website into a Bible app, which first operates on a BlackBerry cellphone. Interestingly, the Bible app became one of the first apps available when the Apple App Store became available in 2008. (Watch the video to learn more about Bobby’s testimony and role in God’s kingdom.)
Global Bible Month and YouVersion
Xavier Critiques the YouVersion Bible App
Bobby’s role in God’s kingdom leads him to create the YouVersion Bible app and Global Bible Month. My decision to watch the virtual celebration for the Bible App is because I use the app frequently. The Bible app continues to help me read scripture for over 200 days a year.
This allows me to find hope, encouragement, and conviction while eliminating the excuse of being too busy to read scripture.
One of the simplest ways the app accomplishes this is through its Verse of the Day. Developers select a verse, such as John 1:1, and have someone present talking points from the passage.
Afterward, users can read more in-depth teaching points, say a short prayer, and discover Bible Plans that relate to the verse. There is also a space for guided prayer that allows you to type out specific requests they can keep confidential or share publicly.
Similarly, you can take notes on specific verses that you can share with anyone or keep confidential. Along with sharing notes with others, YouVersion also helps believers study the Bible in a community setting. There are a plethora of plans on various topics you can study with friends, family, and people you meet through the app.
Using the app consistently also allows users to receive badges for completing specific plans, highlighting scriptures, and taking notes.
In fact, if someone completes a lengthy Bible plan consistently for 30 days, they earn a badge for Global Bible Month.
The app promotes consistency by displaying the number of days and weeks you’ve been using it. This helps combat laziness during times you lack motivation.
Changes to Make after Global Bible Month?
While keeping track of days provides motivation, it can also be discouraging when a streak is broken. As a result, I would include a short questionnaire for users who may have read a physical Bible so they can still receive credit for days they read outside the app.
The questionnaire should ask what scripture they read, the topic it relates to, and how it applies to their life. Surveys may seem tedious, but they help hold users accountable and reveal where growth is happening or where improvements are needed.
Additionally, communication between readers can improve. The improvement involves a feature that enables readers to message each other directly.
This allows for more thought-provoking conversations as readers can do more than just leave brief comments in the Bible plans.
Furthermore, YouVersion’s giving option could be more visible. Jesus says it’s “more blessed to give than receive,” and YouVersion provides readers with many helpful resources.
Therefore, why not continually let users know how they can be a financial blessing to an app that blesses billions daily? Of course, it should be done without pressuring users or promoting money more than the Gospel. However, the reality is that it takes financial resources for the good news to continue spreading.
