Demario Douglas, an Underdog?
The New England Patriots Wide Receiver
Demario Douglas is in his third season as a wide receiver for the New England Patriots. Drafted by the Patriots in 2023 with the 210th pick in the sixth round, many regard Demario as an underdog.
Their perception stems from the fact that he is only 5’8 and weighs about 192 pounds. So how does an “underdog” achieve his dream of playing in the National Football League?
Below, I’ll answer this question by telling Demario’s story and revealing how he humbly trusts God’s plan. Then, I’ll explain what readers can learn from Demario’s faith and journey in the NFL thus far.
The Impact of a Loving Family
Demario Douglas & His Support System
Demario Douglas was born on December 8, 2000, in Jacksonville, Florida. He is the son of Mario Douglas and Angelika Mack. He is also a big brother to her two younger sons.
Demario credits his success to Angelika for several reasons. The first is due to her willingness to raise him as a teenage mother while a sophomore in high school.
Unfortunately, Angelika had to rear him in this manner because his father, Mario, decided to be absent from his life. Despite Mario’s absence, Angelika worked hard to provide the best life possible by finishing high school.
After high school, Angelika worked in the mortgage industry and as a tax preparer. When Demario began to show a sincere interest in football, she left the corporate world and became a fashion designer.
As a designer, she created custom children’s clothes, which gave her the freedom to support Demario’s dream of playing football. This work ethic earned her the nickname “Miss Make It Happen.”
Demario believes seeing “Miss Make It Happen’s” example gave him the work ethic needed to be successful. Angelika also encouraged him to speak his dreams into existence and believe they will manifest.
Along with his Angelika, Demario also credits his success to his grandmother, Yolanda, and great-grandmother, Glennie. Their continuous love and encouragement are instrumental to the man he is today. Knowing this, Demario chooses to wear number 3 for the New England Patriots to honor them
“Pop” Flourishes as a Mandarin Mustang

Another person who’d be proud of Demario’s character and success is his grandfather, who passed away on his first birthday. Since Demario was too young at the time to understand death, he would always call for his poppa. As a result, his family started calling him “Poppa” until a relative shortened it to “Pop.”
“Pop” began catching the attention of Jacksonville area residents with his play on the football field at Mandarin High School.
As a team captain for the Spartans, Demario played on offense, defense, and special teams (he also played basketball for the school). Being a two-sport athlete enabled Demario to acquire several stats you can learn more about here.
That said, I will mention his senior season with the Spartans, where he earned
- 1,752 all-purpose yards.
- 1,382 receiving yards.
- 18 touchdowns.
He was also named Player of the Game four times throughout his collegiate career. His most impressive achievement was helping the Spartans win the 2018 Florida 8A State Championship after having a 2-8 record the previous season.
The state championship game was significant for Demario because he scored four receiving touchdowns, setting a new state record. Becoming a state champion was also a crucial moment in Demario’s life because he did so with his childhood friend Terrell Jennings.
Demario and Terrell are destined to excel in football together, as both currently play for the New England Patriots.
Demario Douglas Collegiate and Professional Career
Demario Douglas Shines with the Flames
But before talking about Demario’s role with the Patriots, I’ll reveal the path he chose to take immediately after high school. While Terrell stayed in Florida to play for Florida A&M University, Demario joined the Liberty Flames.
Coaches from other institutions thought Demario was making a mistake since his skills could benefit institutions with bigger reputations.
While those coaches are right about Demario’s skills, he chose Liberty because he knew it was the school God wanted him to attend.
As a student at Liberty, Demario majored in Sport Management. Athletically, Demario played wide receiver, running back, punt returner, and kick returner.
His career totals with the Flames are as follows:
- Rushing: 7 carries, 109 yards, and 1 touchdown.
- Receiving: 127 receptions, 2,193 yards, 16 touchdowns.
- Punt Returner: 54 returns, 383 yards, 2 touchdowns.
- Kick Off Returner: 17 returns for 368 yards.
Along with these stats, Demario earned recognition for several accomplishments, including helping the Flames win three straight bowl games.
Enduring Adversity in the NFL
Demario’s success with the Flames is the reason why the Patriots drafted him in 2023. While the Patriots have helped Demario fulfill his dream of playing in the NFL, his career has been far from easy.
In three seasons with the Patriots, Demario has accumulated the following stats through 48 games
- Rushing: 18 carriers, 78 yards,
- Receiving: 146 receptions, 1629 yards, 6 touchdowns.
- Punt Returner: 11 returns, 56 yards, 10 fair catches.
These numbers reflect the lack of opportunity Demario has had as an “underdog.” Additionally, he suffered two concussions in 2023 and a hamstring injury last month, causing him to miss a total of four games.
Suffering from concussions and hamstring injuries is known to affect an athlete’s performance even after they’ve been declared healthy. Along with injury, Demario has also had to deal with the tragic loss of his uncle “Tiger” on November 1, 2025.
Humbly Trusting God’s Plan
How Does Demario Display His Faith Daily?
Despite the adversity Demario has endured, he remains anchored in his faith. The day after losing his uncle, he had his first 100-yard receiving game along with a touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons.
Demario believes his uncle watching from up in the sky was a motivating factor for his performance. He also knows that his Heavenly Father is present with him, which helps him play well, despite being heartbroken.
Along with suffering well amid heartbreak, Demario displays his faith through his overall approach to life. Coaches and teammates rave about Demario being a source of joy who is unashamed to share his faith. This comes as no surprise since one of his favorite activities is reading his Bible.
One way he applies what the Bible says is by living by Matthew 23:12, which he has listed in his Instagram bio. The verse mentions how God will exalt those who humble themselves.
Demario humbles himself by choosing to trust God’s process for his NFL career rather than complain about a lack of opportunities. Demario also practices humility by using his position as an NFL athlete to bless others.
He does this by giving back to residents in Jacksonville and St. Augustine, Florida, through activities such as
- A bookbag drive.
- Events for Holidays like Christmas and Easter.
- Youth sports clinics.
What Can Others Learn from Demario Douglas?
So what can young athletes and other sports fans learn from the faith of an “underdog?” First, Demario’s faith serves as a reminder that man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.
This means that even when people feel you are too small or unqualified to do something like play in the NFL, don’t lose hope. Instead, follow Demario’s example by working hard, remaining steadfast in your faith, and believing God will choose you for his purpose and glory.
Second, you must understand that God getting the glory out of your life will come with adversity and trials. While no one wants to endure suffering, know that God will use your trials to make you a complete person.
I believe this truth helps Demario maintain a positive attitude, though he hasn’t had the most notable career thus far.
Lastly, spectators should know that they don’t have to be the star to make a positive impact. On and off the field, Demario strives to be selfless and serve others.
This approach helps him be a compassionate team player who honors God in everything he does.
His humility also puts him in a great position to make a key play that can help the Patriots excel in the playoffs. Who knows, he may make a game-winning play that helps them win Super Bowl LX.
But whether the Patriots win or lose, you can be sure Demario will exalt Christ so that others can come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior.
