Are You Prioritizing Sabbath?

Are You Prioritizing Sabbath? September 19, 2023

Are you prioritizing your Sabbath? I know this question may catch you off guard but truly think about this.

I’m aware that I’m not the only one feeling this way, but September has flown by. It seems like just yesterday when Starbucks unveiled its Fall Drink Menu, signaling the true beginning of autumn for me.

But I’ve noticed one thing about myself since the Fall has begun to swing into its rightful place. I am tired. Now, I can make excuses and say that the beginning of the school year is taking its toll on me. This is true– but it isn’t the whole truth.

The beginning of the year is something that I prepare for all summer. I create all of the fun relationship-building activities, slides, and lesson plans. They are all created ahead of time. I have no excuse for feeling this tired when September is the most prepared I will be all year.

Then I read Exodus 31. This chapter talks about God consecrating the skilled workers and the Sabbath. Sabbath is what I have been avoiding all of this time. I realize that I need to prioritize my Sabbath.

Why is Sabbath so important?

Sabbath is something that God tells the Israelites to partake in as a reminder of who they should be resting. A reminder of the covenant they are making with their God.

God takes this seriously– he goes as far as to say:

“Tell the Israelites: You must observe my Sabbaths, for it is a sign between you and me throughout your generations so that you will know I am the Lord who consecrates you. 14 Observe the Sabbath, for it is holy to you. Whoever profanes it must be put to death. If anyone does work on it, that person must be cut off from his people.” (Exodus 31:13-14 CSB).

Now, I can tell you right now that I myself am not dead. But Sabbath is so important to God because of the reminder given to us and our generations.

But I’m so busy. Won’t God understand?

This is the excuse I have been using for the past month. God most likely will understand where we are coming from. That doesn’t mean he approves of it.

When God requires us to observe something, it is a requirement– not a recommendation. Sabbath is ultimately good for us. Not only is it a time for us to worship God for what he has done but also a time to rest.

Rest is essential to human beings. Scientists don’t know why we require sleep– my guess is that God made us this way to show our need for Him. When we are tired, we do not function the same way we do when we are fully rested. This may be most obviously physical, but it matters spiritually as well.

We are more likely to have better routines, thinking, and relationships when we have spiritually rested in the Lord.

How Can I Prioritize My Sabbath?

Here is a list of ways you can prioritize your Sabbath:

  1. Digital Detox: Disconnect from technology. Turn off your phone, computer, and other devices to create a peaceful and distraction-free environment. I have an article about my own experience here. Is Your Digital Life Taking Away From Spiritual Rest?
  2. Plan Ahead: Prepare for the Sabbath by completing tasks and chores in advance. This way, you won’t feel the pressure to work on your day of rest.
  3. Set Boundaries: Communicate your Sabbath observance with family, friends, and colleagues. Set clear boundaries so they know not to disturb you during this time. My husband and I try our hardest to make Sunday a day of true rest by having our weekend chores done on Saturdays.
  4. Worship and Reflection: Attend a religious service or spend time in personal reflection and prayer to nourish your spiritual side. I personally love putting on a Worship Playlist on my way to work each day.
  5. Sabbath Meals: Share special meals with loved ones, focusing on quality time and conversation. Consider incorporating traditional Sabbath foods.
  6. Nature and Outdoors: Spend time in nature. Go for a hike, walk, or simply sit in a park to appreciate the beauty of the world around you.
  7. Creative Pursuits: Engage in creative activities that bring you joy, such as painting, writing, or playing a musical instrument.
  8. Mindfulness and Meditation: Practice mindfulness and meditation to center yourself and reduce stress.
  9. Community Engagement: Volunteer or engage in community service activities to give back and strengthen your sense of purpose.
  10. Read and Learn: Use the Sabbath as an opportunity for reading and learning, whether it’s religious texts, literature, or self-improvement books.
  11. Family Time: Spend quality time with your family, playing games, having deep conversations, or going on outings together.
  12. Rest and Napping: Don’t underestimate the power of rest. Take short naps or engage in restful activities to recharge. I highly recommend post-Church naps on Sunday.
  13. Gratitude Practice: Cultivate an attitude of gratitude by reflecting on your blessings and expressing thanks.
  14. Disconnect from Work: Make a conscious effort to avoid work-related tasks and thoughts during the Sabbath. Delegate responsibilities if necessary.
  15. Plan Social Gatherings: Organize social gatherings with like-minded individuals who also prioritize the Sabbath. It can be a source of support and community.

In whatever way you take part in your Sabbath, make it something you look forward to. God looks forward to spending time with us– make this time something that you can truly give to God.
