Since it is now Easter Sunday, I thought I’d rehearse one of my favourite Easter themes: justification by resurrection. One of my most treasured Pauline texts is Rom 4:25, “He was handed over for our sins and raised for our justification.” I’ve invested a lot time studying and meditating on this verse. I wrote my Honours Thesis on the theme of resurrection and justification (see my Saving Righteousness of God chap 3; and Daniel Kirk did his Ph.D thesis on the same... Read more

I posted this a few years ago, but it is worth posting again because it is so cool! Read more

We’ve noted that Satisfaction, Exemplary, Penal Substitution, and Christus Victor images are not mutually exclusive. I’ve also argued, see here, that Christus Victor... Read more

Over at ABC  Religion and Ethics is an article assessing the prospects for Archbishop Justin Welby and what his ministry might do for the Anglican church in contrast to the former ministry of Rowan Williams and the concurrent ministry of Pope Francis I. Contributors include Andrew McGowan (no, not the Scottish one), Michael Jensen, Bruce Kaye, Elizabeth Oldfield, Muriel Porter, and Samuel Wells. According to McGowan: Pope Francis’s striking simplicity makes more of a contrast than was probably intended or... Read more

Over at THEAGE.TV is a British documentary by journalist Rod Liddel on The Trouble with Atheism, which is a great critique of the modern atheist movement with Richard Dawkins and co. I saw it several years ago, glad it is now available in Australia and perhaps elsewhere. Read more

Thanks to my good friend Cameron West, I’ve been reading through Belden C. Lane’s book Ravished by Beauty: The Surprising Legacy of Reformed Spirituality. The book deals with a neglected theme in Reformed spirituality, the awakening of a desire for a God of ravishing beauty mirrored so generously in the world of nature, a beauty that evokes a fervent desire for God. He writes: “The genius of the Reformed tradition, in fact, is its ability to combine these seemingly contradictory themes [awe... Read more
