Here is a very important quote from Michael Goheen and Craig Bartholomew’s book Drama of Scripture: Finding our Place in God’s Story: Many of us have read the Bible as if it were merely a mosaic of little bits – theological bits, moral bits, historical-critical bits, sermon bits, devotional bits. But when we read the Bible in such a fragmented way, we ignore it’s divine author’s intention to shape our lives through its story. All humanity communities live out some story... Read more

I can’t believe I stumbled across a book called A New New Testament edited by Hal Taussig and foreword by John Dominic Crossan. The publisher of the book includes this blurb: In February of 2012, a council of scholars and spiritual leaders, convened by religion scholar Hal Taussig, came together to discuss, debate, and reconsider which books belong in the New Testament. They talked about dozens of newly found texts, the lessons therein, and how they inform the previously bound books. Reading the existing New Testament... Read more

Over at First Things is a great article by my favourite Baptist Theologian, Timothy George, on The Next Pope Should Be Catholic. In particular I liked these two quotes: John Paul II invited Christians throughout the divided Church to advise him on how he could best carry out his office in faithfulness to Jesus’ prayer that his disciples “may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that You sent me” (John 17:21). Benedict XVI deepened this emphasis. To... Read more

I missed this last week. The prayer for the third week of Lent in the BCP is powerful: Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with... Read more

Over at The Guardian, N.T. Wright has an article on The Church Maybe Hypocritical about Sex, But No-one Else is Guilty? He concludes: The Christian has a particular angle on virtue. Some Protestant traditions have frowned on it: doesn’t it mean we are trying to earn salvation by “good works”? Answer: no – it is all based on God’s grace. But God’s grace doesn’t work “automatically”. Part of the “fruit of the spirit”, along with faith, hope and love, is... Read more

Over at Stories Untold is an interview with Gary Wills about his book on Why Priests? A Failed Tradition. Wills objections to the idea of a priesthood on three grounds: (1) The theology of Hebrews prohibits it, (2) The negative historical impact of the priesthood in politics and socio-economics, and (3) It is symbolic for monarchial hierarchy. In the interview he states: The idea of a separate Christian priesthood is as invalid for the Anglicans as for the Catholics because it,... Read more

The best two things about Canada are (1) Tim Horton’s donuts and (2) Mariam Kamell at Regent College. Mariam co-wrote a commentary on James with Craig Blomberg, and has some further works in the pipeline on social justice. She’s great value! Thanks to John Frederick, there is an interview with Mariam Kamell ahead of the on-line Ecclesia and Ethics Conference hubbed in St. Andrews. Read more
