President Trump campaigned on performing the largest mass deportation of illegal immigrants in America’s history. He said they would deport “the worst of the worst,” meaning those with criminal records. The resulting raids have been very polarizing across the country. Let’s take a look.

Current Statistics on Trump’s Mass Deportations

President Trump’s administration is actively carrying out mass deportations, with over 527,000 people deported so far, and 1+ million “self-deportations.” In his second term, he conducted widespread raids in sanctuary cities, schools, hospitals, and even places of worship. The campaign has drawn sharp criticism from religious leaders, immigrant advocates, and civil society groups, while polls show immigrants themselves are deeply divided—supporting border enforcement but rejecting indiscriminate deportations.

Problems With the Raids

There has been tremendous pushback in many cities across the U.S.:

  • ICE has been authorized to conduct raids in schools, hospitals, and places of worship, reversing prior restrictions.
  • The raids have been very “heavy-handed,” meaning they have been violent at times, and have lacked dignity and compassion for the immigrants. Anti-ICE protests have contributed significantly to the level of violence.
  • Deportation flights have been controversial, e.g., sending Ukrainian migrants back into a war zone.
  • Reports of botched deportations have surfaced, including individuals sent to countries where they face torture despite court orders.
  • The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) condemned mass deportations, calling them “indiscriminate” and a violation of human dignity.
  • Fear of raids has disrupted industries like agriculture, construction, and hospitality, where immigrant labor is critical.
  • Families report separations and anxiety, with children afraid their parents may be detained when taking them to school.

Trump’s deportation campaign is one of the most aggressive in U.S. history, combining border crackdowns with interior raids. While it has reduced illegal crossings at the southern border, it has also triggered legal challenges, humanitarian concerns, and widespread opposition from religious leaders and immigrant communities. The administration frames it as fulfilling campaign promises, but critics argue it undermines human dignity and violates international law.

How Did We Get Here?

As always, the truth is somewhere in the middle of the argument:

  • Trump promised to deport the “worst of the worst.” Many people would agree with that approach. The scope has expanded to include many immigrants who have been here illegally for years. One could argue they should have addressed the situation at that time, but if they have built productive lives here for many years, they should not be part of the raids. The President and Homeland Security must return to their original scope: the “worst of the worst,” and they must dial it back when conducting these raids. These are people, not numbers.
  • Apprehending violent criminals carries a significant risk to the ICE agents. I can understand those raids requiring a heavier-handed approach. ICE must handle separately those who have no history of violence.
  • The Anti-ICE raids have gotten entirely out of control and exacerbated an already bad situation. Politicians who are calling for these protests and want ICE to remove protective masks need to stop immediately. Peaceful protesting is fine, but more often than not, it becomes violent. Remove from office the politicians who call to doxx the agents.”
  • “Sanctuary” cities are problematic in that they blatantly ignore federal immigration laws. If you don’t like the law, vote for people who will change it. You cannot just follow the rules you want in this country.
  • I have not seen any effort by Congress to fix the legal immigration process. Why have lawmakers failed to assign committees to resolve issues in the legal process and to create a path to citizenship for those who entered illegally but built productive lives? This is Congress failing the American people once again.

The Catholic View

Matthew 25:35“For I was hungry, and you gave me food, I was thirsty, and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me,” Hospitality toward the vulnerable is presented as a measure of righteousness.

Luke 4:18-19“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” Jesus consistently identified with the poor, the outcast, and those without social power. Immigration raids often target precisely these groups—families, workers, and the undocumented who live in fear.

Mark 3:1-6“Again he entered the synagogue. There was a man there who had a withered hand. They watched him closely to see if he would cure him on the sabbath so that they might accuse him. He said to the man with the withered hand, “Come up here before us.” Then he said to them, “Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?”

But they remained silent. Looking around at them with anger and grieved at their hardness of heart, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately took counsel with the Herodians against him to put him to death.” Jesus often challenged rigid applications of law when they harmed people. He prioritized mercy and human dignity over strict enforcement.

The Final Word

The fact remains that we are in this mess because Biden and his administration completely ignored immigration law and incentivized millions of people to come into the country with little to no vetting. This was done to make them citizens and sway elections. Trump has swung the pendulum to the complete opposite side. Both approaches are unacceptable, and we as a people must drive policy to one that is humane, accommodates legitimate asylum requests, and protects the American citizens. The Church teaches that nations may regulate borders, yet they must balance this right with the duty to protect human dignity and uphold the rights of migrants (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2241). We have a long way to go to get there.

About Dennis McIntyre
In my early years, I was a member of the Methodist church, where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector. I always felt very faith-filled, but something was missing. My wife is Catholic, and my children were baptized as Catholics, which helped me find what I was looking for. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself, walking with Jesus. I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church in 2004. I am a Spiritual Director and very active in ministry, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and providing spiritual direction. I have spent time working with the sick and terminally ill in local hospitals and hospice care centers, and I have found these ministries challenging and extremely rewarding.
