This Sunday, January 11, is the Baptism of the Lord. This weekend’s readings reveal Jesus as the Son of God at His baptism. The gospel is from the book of Matthew. Let’s take a look.
Gospel Text – Matthew 3:13-17
“Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” Jesus said to him in reply, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him. After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
First Reading – Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7
God presents His chosen Servant, filled with the Spirit, in whom He delights. The Servant brings justice gently, without crushing the weak or shouting for attention. God makes a covenant with Him for the people and a light to the nations, opening blind eyes and freeing prisoners.
Second Reading – Acts 10:34-38
Peter declares that God shows no partiality—His salvation is for every nation. Jesus’ ministry began after His baptism, when God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and power. Jesus then went about doing good and healing all who the devil oppressed, because God was with Him.
Gospel Reading – Matthew 3:13-17 – The Baptism of the Lord

John baptizes Jesus to “fulfill all righteousness”, identifying with humanity and beginning His mission. As He rises from the water:
- The heavens open
- The Spirit descends like a dove
- God the Father proclaims Jesus as His beloved Son.”
This is the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry.
The Catholic View
The Revelation of Jesus as God’s Spirit‑Anointed Servant is the central theme of the readings for this Sunday. Across all three readings, a single truth emerges:
God fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy in Jesus, the Servant He chooses, loves, fills with the Spirit, and sends to bring justice, healing, and salvation to all nations.
The Church pairs these readings as they form a theological high point:
- Isaiah: “Here is my Servant… I put my Spirit upon Him.”
- Matthew: The Spirit actually descends on Jesus at His baptism.
- Acts: The apostles proclaim that Jesus, anointed with the Spirit, brings salvation to all.
This is the revelation of Jesus’ identity and mission—and the invitation for the Church to share in it.
