Quitter by Jon Acuff | Book Review May 4, 2011

On the front page of Jon Acuff’s book Quitter is the line, “Closing the gap between your day job and your dream job.” I’ll admit, when I first saw the book I thought to myself, “Is this the Christian version of The 4-Hour Work Week or something?” I wasn’t sure if the world needed another ‘quit-your-day-job-so-that-you-can-pursue-your-dreams-book.’

But it wasn’t like that. Not at all.

As I read Jon’s story about his journey through eight jobs in eight years and how he finally landed his dream job, I realized that ‘closing the gap’ didn’t mean ‘making the leap’ to full time self-employment. Jon doesn’t give some fluff fairy tale about how “you too can earn six figures and work from home!” Not even close. He shared how his passion of writing led him to ultimately accept an amazing job doing what he loves.

One of the things I enjoyed most about his book was his encouragement to work harder than you ever had on your dream, even if that means waking up at 5:00 am to write or using your lunch hour organize your business thoughts. His suggestions were powerful because he lived them. It was as though he was writing to a younger version of himself urging him to WAKE UP and get motivated.

Quitter isn’t about giving up everything to chase a dream. It’s about being intentional with the time we have and to pursue your dream without walking away from responsibility. Most of us have a day-job and have a passion for something different. Your goal shouldn’t be to find the first hole out of your job and run for the hills. You have a greater chance of succeeding with a passion if you can master the art of giving your work 100% and working your tail off during your free time.

If you’re the kind of person who feels handcuffed to a day-job or just wants to throw in the towel to ‘grow your blog,’ I’d suggest you read Jon’s book first.

Quitter comes out on Tuesday, May 10! Faith and Finance is giving away a copy of the book on Wednesday, May 11 – so tune in to see how you can enter.
