If we had only one word to describe God, I think the word love would be at the top of the list. When Christ shared the greatest commandment it was to ‘love the Lord your God with all your heart,’ followed by the command to ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’
As I read through a few scriptures at the beginning of this year, I realized that many of the famous scriptures we remember have to do with love. Whether we’re talking about marriage, friendship, sacrifice, finances, or our faith in God, the Bible helps us to put things into perspective when it comes to love.
Since this is a financial blog, I figured I’d start with the verse that deals with the green stuff we talk about every week. Enjoy!
1 Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
Genesis 29:20
So Jacob worked seven years to pay for Rachel. But his love for her was so strong that it seemed to him but a few days.
Proverbs 10:12
Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs.
Matthew 6:24-25
No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?

Jesus replied, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 13:8
Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
