About

John San Nicolas researches American Christianity and politics. Having grown up evangelical, John is very interested in how politics and faith mix, for better and worse. Although he no longer identifies with the Christian tradition, John remains interested in helping people of all traditions, religious or not, work towards mutual understanding and cooperation to build up their shared political life.

John graduated from the University of New Mexico where he double-majored in Religious Studies and Philosophy. He completed his honors thesis, “Citizens of Heaven and Earth: A Critical Discourse Analysis of US Megachurch Political Sermon Series, 2020-2024.” His thesis was awarded highest honors by UNM’s Religious Studies program.

John currently works as a researcher for the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies at USC Dornsife. He has written for the Religion for Breakfast YouTube channel and BeliefNet. You can follow John on Substack and watch his short-form content on Instagram and TikTok (@religionwithjohn).
