Be Anxious for Nothing

Be Anxious for Nothing

The Bible tells us, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God… will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

But what happens when life looks nothing like you hoped, and anxiety keeps showing up anyway?

I wrestled with that question after my marriage ended and my nest grew empty. I knew the verse. I wanted the peace. But at 3 a.m., when my chest tightened and my thoughts spiraled, peace felt far away.

Anxiety Is Part of Being Human

Too often in Christian circles, we treat anxiety like a lack of faith. But the truth is, even God’s people struggled. Elijah despaired under a broom tree. David poured out anxious psalms. Even Jesus sweat drops of blood in Gethsemane.

Anxiety doesn’t mean you’ve failed God. It means you’re human.

Where God Meets Us

Philippians doesn’t promise we won’t feel anxious—it promises that when we bring our anxious hearts to God, His peace will guard us. Not erase the struggle, but guard us in it.

When my own anxiety threatened to overwhelm me, God met me in small steps:

  • In whispered prayers when I had no words.

  • In the kindness of a friend who listened.

  • In the courage to take a single next step, even while afraid.

Slowly, the peace grew. Not all at once. But steady, enough for the day.

A Step Toward God’s Peace

If you’re anxious about your second act, try this:

  • Pray honestly. Don’t hide your fear. Lay it bare before God.

  • Practice gratitude. Even small things—a sunrise, a hot cup of tea—can shift your perspective.

  • Take one step. God often lights the path little by little, not all at once.

The Invitation

Your life may look different than you imagined. But God is not finished with you. Anxiety is not the end of your story.

The peace of Christ is already moving toward you. Step into it, one prayer, one breath, one act of trust at a time.
