Mayim Bialik is a working actress, an Orthodox Jew, and a PhD in neuroscience. However, not everyone thinks it’s possible to believe in G-d and be a scientist. In this video for the webseries Jew in the City, she muses on how it’s possible to follow both the scientific and spiritual paths. Read more

Allure magazine recently asked Italian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana what ten items they think every woman should own. Some of the things were pretty obvious, like high heels, makeup, and the Mediterranean Diet. (I think that’s a thing you “follow” and not a thing that you “have,” but whatevs.) However, they did have one less expected item: a rosary. “It reminds us of our beloved Sicily, and of the roots and traditions that have become such an important... Read more

A commercial for Axe deodorant has been banned in South Africa for offending Christian viewers. The campaign, called “Even Angels Will Fall,” depicts angels who leave heaven because of the allure of a hot guy’s Axe smell. The full ad is below: what do you think? Personally, I think the smell of Axe is pretty offensive on its own, but I don’t feel the need to ban it. Read more

The Brown family from Sister Wives has just added another child to their brood as fourth wife Robyn gave birth to baby Solomon on Wednesday. Solomon is Robyn’s first child with Kody, and she has three children from a previous marriage who were absorbed into the Brown family. (The kids call Kody “Dad” but still see their father and have his last name, which totally isn’t awkward for them at all.) Solomon seems like a good name for the baby,... Read more

Oprah Winfrey recently paid a visit to two Orthodox Jewish communities in Brooklyn.  According to Chabad.org, the blog for the Lubavitch sect of Orthodox Jews, Oprah took part in a ritual meal (I’m going to guess a Shabbat dinner?), interviewed women from the community, and toured a mikveh (although she didn’t actually get in one, which could be her own ish about not wanting to be naked or Lubavitch ish about not wanting a non-Jew getting in their ritual bath).... Read more

According to the National Enquirer (roll your eyes all you want, but they were totally right about John Edwards), Paul McCartney has told friends that he is planning to convert to Judaism at the behest of his new bride, Nancy Shevell. Nancy is a New York socialite and the cousin of Barbara Walters, and unlike previous wife Heather Mills she has the approval of McCartney’s children – daughter Stella designed Nancy’s wedding dress. While I looooove the idea of having... Read more

In the October issue of Nylon magazine, actor Anton Yelchin (best known for playing Chekhov in the JJ Abrams Star Trek reboot) talks about his family’s struggle to leave Russia and the antisemitism they experienced there. His parents, Viktor and Irina, were pairs figure skaters in the 1970s and even qualified for the national Olympic team. However, they were banned from performing, possibly because they were Jewish. The Yelchin family, like many other Jewish people, left the Soviet Union in... Read more

Actress and singer Zooey Deschanel sang the national anthem at the World Series last week, but that’s not her only big accomplishment this month. She & Him (her musical collaboration with M. Ward) are releasing a Christmas album, the cleverly titled A Very She & Him Christmas. Here’s one of the tracks: Read more

In a new interview, actress Lucy Liu says that she’s open to religion and curious to learn more about different faiths. Since she works in Hollywood, it seems fitting that she was asked about Scientology.  “I think it’s unfortunate when people are against something that can bring so much guidance for people,” she says. “I don’t know much about Scientology – I know a little bit about it – but if it helps someone become less addicted to something, or... Read more

Teen superstar Justin Bieber is recording a Christmas album. While there’s not a full track listing yet, he recorded a version of “The Christmas Song” (that would be the “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire” one) with his mentor Usher. Justin also did a song with Mariah Carey, whose “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is one of the best holiday pop songs ever (and I’m Jewish, so that’s saying something). Read more
