I thought, as I picked up my copy of Cravings: A Catholic Wrestles with Food, Self-Image, and God, by Mary DeTurris Poust, that it would be a pleasant read (the author is an impeccable writer) that I would then pass along to a few people (which I will) and then move on. After all, I do not have an eating disorder. I’ve only recently been able to gain weight. (Don’t throw things. I can’t help it.) What I found, though, was... Read more

As a member of Audible I get two audiobooks a month. My book selection for audiobooks has a slightly different criteria. Mainly to get the most bang for the buck I try to find long audiobooks. Fantasy novels often fit this criteria. So searching through their best sellers list for Science Fiction I ran across a novel titled “Pushing Ice” by Alastair Reynolds. It sounded interesting enough and was close to 20 hours. It also turned out to be quite... Read more

Stout Hearts and Whizzing Biscuits (Kingdom of Patria #1)  and Stoop of Mastodon Meadow (Kingdom of Patria, #2) by Daniel McInerny When I was first contacted about this, the author assured me that they’re a completely electronic project. But guess what! They are now available through Amazon as hard copy books, too! Oh, my! What a project! Maps and blogs and radio in addition to the stories themselves, which are good in all the ways that make you remember them long after you’ve put them... Read more

“War in Heaven” is a novel written by Charles Williams in 1930. This was his first novel and from what I have read, it was rated as his best novel.   I had been meaning to get around to reading this author mainly since he was one of the famous Inklings and a sale on his books helped me to get around to it. This novel is a supernatural thriller and involves the Grail being found in a country parish... Read more

Great story. Real characters. Good writing. This book was, in some ways, applied Theology of the Body. It’s romance that’s just about what I like and Catholicism not shoved down my throat. Guys, be warned: I’d call this chick lit. Gals, be encouraged: it’s gooood. It’s “name a big well-sold author” good. It’s completely Catholic, but it’s also completely honest. It presents real life in a way that will make you think that you could be lunching with these people. This... Read more

If a good person decides to fight against evil he will always be at a disadvantage. … The evil person will naturally use every devious and nasty trick he can think of. That’s why he’s bad: he is a liar, a cheat, a murderer and a thoroughgoing scoundrel. However, the good person cannot use the same evil tricks. So the evil one will lie and scheme. He will punch below the belt and throw salt in the good guy’s eyes.... Read more

(Yes, muchly is a word. At least when you are as delighted by a book as I was by Terrapin.) You know what I love more than almost anything? A good story. When that story is packaged between two covers and called a book, even better. (Yeah, it’s okay on my Kindle too. I’ll give you that. The covers can be metaphorical.) So, given the chance to review T.M. Doran’s latest, Terrapin, I pretty much replied right away. And I pretty... Read more

The Crimes of Galahad by H. Albertus Boli Ll.D. My rating: 4 of 5 stars I’ve long been a fan of Dr. Boli’s Celebrated Magazine. I was mildly interested when The Crimes of Galahad was published and then read a review from two reviewers I trust who both enjoyed it and also declined to describe much of it. This piqued my interest. The good Dr. Boli’s secretary has provided me with a review copy which I very much appreciated, especially... Read more

The release of the audiobook, read by author Andrew Ordover, prompted me to update my review. The price can’t be beat – $5! For why you want to hear it, read on! And I didn’t want to rely on Internet archives. First of all, our local paper is crap, and it keeps crap archives online. But more importantly, when they do archive stories, they do what everyone else does–they reformat them into a computer-friendly layout. Well, I didn’t want that.... Read more
