This is a talk that I gave to our RCIA class. I’m sharing it here for anyone else who’d like a little help finding their way around the Catechism, which can be confusing but need not be. I am not an expert on the Catechism, but I do know how to use it. The Catechism can be a bit tricky to find your way around so I wanted to take just a couple of minutes to familiarize everyone with it.... Read more

The Sabbath by Abraham Joshua Heschel My rating: 4 of 5 stars Continuing my education on the third commandment and why we need to take it seriously. Ok, I’m already converted to the concept and live it to the best of my ability … but I want to elevate it in my mind and heart (if that makes sense). I think Heschel would understand what I want to do because this book is obviously written for that concept. Although I... Read more

The Odyssey by Homer I saw that Scott and Jesse (and others) will be discussing the Odyssey on SFFaudio sometime soon, a few books at a time. This piqued my interest and I began listening to the LibriVox free version. I have read the Odyssey before, though I would be hard pressed to remember when, and, of course, it is ubiquitous in our culture as a story reference. I’m just getting started, having read 1-4 of the 24 books. I... Read more

Memes used to be all the rage but now they are few and far between. So it was nice to see The Curt Jester had one posted and even nicer to be called a fellow book addict and tagged. So, here are the rules. You post the rules and a link back to the person who tagged you. You also tell them that they’ve been tagged on their own blog, rather than just hoping they’ll discover it for themselves. Then... Read more

From my quote journal. I had a friend who was teaching high school English in the mid 80s. He asked the class, “How many of you have seen Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan?” They all raised their hands, and he said, “OK, we don’t have to read Moby Dick.” Commenter from CraftLit’s forum at Ravelry.com Read more

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins My rating: 4 of 5 stars I always knew that eventually I’d have to read this book. For one thing, I figured that Scott would choose it for the A Good Story is Hard to Find podcast, because I know he’s a fan. Then, of course there is the upcoming movie which looks darned good in the trailer. And the myriad book buddies who are incredulous that I haven’t read it. Who knew that... Read more

The Psalms of David Reviewed by Joseph at Zombie Parent’s Guide. This particular edition of the Psalms is the King James Version with illustrations by James Freemantle. Freemantle was a British soldier who traveled all over the Middle East. During his second marriage, he began to transcribe the Psalms and illustrate the book for his wife Clara. He included much of the flora and fauna of the Middle East, practically on every page of the book. It took over thirty... Read more

I’ve been meaning for some time to tell y’all about my personal 2012 cooking challenge. I have quite a few cookbooks and yet I cook from them so rarely. Many of them I have read numerous times but still have never been impelled to do more than cook the same two or three recipes that interested me originally. This year I thought I’d make two-three dishes from a particular cookbook each week. If all goes well, I’ll have provided much... Read more

In the End, Amazon is Gonna Win Don’t Support Your Local Bookseller: This guy calls BS on the whole “let’s save the independent bookstore” lament and instead praises Amazon. In the process, he slaughters quite a few sacred cows. Like the Gadgetopia guy says, “why do I feel so bad for agreeing with him?” Read his take on it here and then do click through and read the original article in its entirety. Read more
