Yesterday I shared some up close photos of Mrs. Robin’s babies, and commented on how over the last few days they’ve gone from prehistoric creatures to almost birds. So imagine my surprise today when I checked in on the little family – the soft down has already become little feathers! Look at their spines and wings! Not only that, Mrs. Morning Dove has some big news from her nest. On Monday, I noticed that one of her eggs had a... Read more

The good news with today’s update on Mrs. Robin and her babies is that egg #4 is still in the nest. Whether or not it’s going to actually hatch is another story. But the three babies who are here are growing by leaps and bounds! They’re holding their heads up with beaks open in anticipation of breakfast. Their feathers are starting to come in. Just a few days ago they looked like science projects, and today they’re starting to look like actual... Read more

I generally stay out of the global warming debate. I’m not a scientist and I wouldn’t try to argue science or research with people smarter than I am. But when I saw this video today I had to share a thought: I get that the temperature of the earth is changing. I get that climates shift geographically. I get that weather patterns go wonky every few or hundred or thousand years. What I don’t get? The notion that man is... Read more

Mrs. Robin snuck away this afternoon – to do a little worm hunting, I imagine – so I used that opportunity to sneak into the garage attic to check on the babies. As of yesterday, we had three babies and one unhatched egg. Today, I see three scrawny but growing nestlings … but no egg. It’s possible that the egg is underneath one of the baby birds. There’s also the very real possibility that another bird stole the egg. I didn’t... Read more

Curiosity got the best of me this morning, so I snuck outside to see if I could find a moment when Mrs. Robin was off the nest so I could check the hatched egg count. This week found two eggs had hatched – two baby robins! Mrs. Robin had built her next on the ledge of one of our garage attic windows. (And that was quite a struggle!) That means I can go inside the garage attic, look through the window... Read more

I’m an avid reader of real books. You know, pages of paper between a paper or cardboard cover. While I get the need for electronic books, they’ll never be a replacement for an actual book you can hold in your hand, with paper pages you can fold over to mark spots you want to remember, pages filled with pencil notes and fingerprints in chocolate and splashes of water from reading in the bath. I’m also very supportive of humanitarian causes,... Read more

If you’re following along with the story of Mrs. Robin and her eggs, I have big news: two of the eggs have hatched! And I mean, just hatched. I was out with Bailey and noticed a robin’s egg shell in the grass – it hadn’t been there this morning. So I snuck up into the garage attic to peek through the window. Mrs. Robin saw me and flew off the nest just long enough for me to catch these photos... Read more

Here in Western NY, the weather has finally warmed up and it looks like the s-n-o-w is gone until winter. That means it’s time for a reminder about leaving your dog in a hot car. In July 2011, I wrote a post for my blog in which I explained how heat affects your dog, and then did some experiments measuring the temperature in the car compared with the temperature outside the car. It’s worth reposting here, since it’s such an important issue... Read more

A (fairly) long time ago, in a galaxy … well, not far away, but definitely in another neighborhood that required as least one bus transfer … I used to write about entertainment. Christian entertainment, and Christians in entertainment, and entertainment that Christians might like, and entertainment Christians might not like, and things that had a Jesus fish on it so Christians knew it was entertainment safe for Christian consumption, and “American Idol.” I wrote for fabulous editors and wonderful publications and I loved a great deal of the... Read more

Hopefully you’re not sick of my updates about Mrs. Robin and her nest. But watching her overcome the obstacles to build the nest, and the fact that darling husband had to give her a helping hand, have bonded me to this bird and her baby egg. So imagine my surprise today when I went into the garage attic to peek on her and found … three more eggs! The last two days Mrs. Robin has been fending off some attacks... Read more
