It is undeniable that so many Christians have tied themselves with Donald Trump because they have been led to believe it is a Christian duty to do so by various Christian leaders. They believe in Trump. They believe he is their savior, which is why when Eric Trump said his father literally saved Christianity, they nodded in agreement. This is also why they want to hold on to the notion that Trump won the election, because they came to believe he was their savior appointed by God to make America great again. Did they not know what they were doing was wrong, that they put their trust in a “prince,” in an earthly ruler to save them? Have they not read in the Psalms, “Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no help” (Ps. 146:3 RSV)? Do they not realize Trump himself ridicules them behind their backs?
Trump is not the savior of Christianity. He is not the savior of America. He is not concerned about making America great. He is not concerned about the welfare of the nation. He is only concerned for himself. Those who put their trust in him will get burned (if they have not already. Because he lost the presidential election, he is showing the world how cruel and vindicative he can be. Instead of making America great, he will make America (and the world) pay. He will seek to create havoc, leaving chaos and destruction behind him, chaos and destruction which will take much time and effort to fix and heal. If Trump cared about America, if he cared about making America great, he would continue to serve the best interests of America rather than his own selfish desires, and he would try to leave America in the best shape possible when he leaves office; that he does not do so, that he is willing to destroy what he can and leave America in ruins shows he never was concerned with making America great, but rather, making himself great through the accumulation of power and wealth.
Trump is not the only one. Many of the same people who promoted him as the savior of the United States, as the one we all need because only he can make things great, now show they do not care about the United States but would rather destroy it and the people within it than to give up power. Thus, Stephen Kruiser on PJMedia, encouraged Trump to go “scorched earth” with the United States, to do as much damage as he can while he still has power.
This is not anything new with the Republicans; this is the strategy they have held for some time – if they do not get what they want, they will do what they can to hurt the United States, to take it down until the people of the United States relent and let them have the power. This is what Mitch McConnell did during the Obama administration, and it is what we should expect Republicans to do under Biden. McConnell, like Trump, like so many of the GOP and those who promote the GOP, really does not care about America. This is why McConnell and the rest of the GOP can stand behind Trump while Trump does whatever he can to get revenge for being cast out of office.
The United States is going to be in a terrible state when Biden starts his presidency, and this is because of Trump and his allies. We should not forget this; but what is worse, it is likely those who helped Trump defile the United States will try to sabotage Biden every step of the way, doing what they can to make sure Biden does not fix the damage Trump has done to the United States. They hope people will forget so that they can blame Biden for their own actions, for they believe if they do so, they will be able to get power once again. We should not allow them to succeed. We should remember who put their own interest over the people of the United States, and not let them create a false narrative to lead people astray.
Those who claim Trump is a Christian, or is helping Christians, need to look carefully at what he has done. It is obvious Trump only care about himself. He does everything for himself. He is selfish, while Christianity teaches us not to be selfish, but to put the interest of others above our own: “Do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philp 2:3-4 RSV). Trump has created an image for Christianity which many now follow. They do not listen to Scripture. They do not engage others out of desire to help them, which is why so many of them are not upset with Trump destroying the American Republic, because they are like him, wanting to destroy what they cannot control. We can see this is the way many Christians, far from acting out of love, are unwilling to do what it takes to help others; inconveniences which save lives are dismissed in the name of “freedom,” such as when Christians are told they must temporarily close their churches in order to stop the spread of COVID19.
Not all Christians are like this, not all Christians back Trump, not all Christians ignore the common good. Those who follow Christ, follow Paul when he said, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. For if any one thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself” (Gal. 6:2-3 RSV). Trump, Trump’s base, Trump’s followers all think about themselves and elevating themselves, and in doing so, show they do not care about others. This is why it is not surprising to see them imitating Trump and his selfishness by ignoring the burdens of others. “I will not be told what to do” is far from the Christian spirit – indeed, it is the spirit of anti-Christ. Is it any wonder that those same people who would not listen to mask mandates, who will not practice social distancing, who claimed they wanted to make America great are, like Trump, doing what they can to hurt the nation and cause as much pain and destruction as they can for not getting their way? Such temper tantrums are far from what is expected of Christians; such temper tantrums, because they will end up getting many people needlessly killed, are far from what those who truly support and defend life will do. But are we truly surprise? Those who claimed they wanted to make America great are now doing all they can to destroy it when they do not get what they want. It is the same people who claim to be pro-life, to want to defend life, who will do nothing when life and the protection of life is on the line. They are concerned for life as much as they are concerned for the greatness of the American Republic: not at all.[1] It is all a farce. Their recklessness not only threatens the livelihood of those around them, it threatens to dismantle and destroy the United States itself.
Trump, and the Trump presidency has revealed the darkness which has come across the United States. Trump is not the one who caused it, but he has encouraged it, made it grow, and wielded it for his own private interest. The people who blindly follow him will be hurt just as much as those who oppose him. He has a history of destroying all that he touches. He desires to make America pay for losing. Many of his followers do so as well. Let us hope and pray that in the few days he has left in office, he will not do something so drastically evil, something so devastating, that it will be impossible for the world to recover. It has already been revealed that he thought about starting a war with Iran. Thankfully, that was stopped. Hopefully, his next great idea will be stopped just as quickly.
[1] Thus, their indifference to capital punishment, and the way the Trump Administration is expediting federal executions, to kill as many people as possible, shows how they truly do not care about the protection of life. It is all a sham.
