Colossians 3: Whatever You Do

Colossians 3: Whatever You Do

“Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” -Colossians 3:17

Christianity is a non-compartmentalized religion. In other words, Christians cannot live for Christ in some areas, such as a worship service or in Bible reading, then live however they wish in other areas. Why? Because of Colossians 3:17. Three simple, yet powerful words: “Whatever you do.” Not “everything except” or “every Sunday” but “whatever you do.”

Paul specifies that whether words or actions, all is to be done in the name of the Lord Jesus–and with thanks. If we cannot do something in the name of Jesus, then we are not to do it. This includes everything from eating habits to television consumption to spending to work performance. To use a modern analogy, if Jesus was in the room, would you still do the activity you are doing?

Using this as our basis for decision-making takes our eyes away from being better than the next person and instead focused on Jesus. As his followers, this is our goal. Today, remember to live for him “whatever you do.”
