Hebrews 2: Overcoming Temptation

Hebrews 2: Overcoming Temptation October 17, 2011

“Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.” -Hebrew 2:18

Everyone struggles with temptation. The particular area will vary, but the struggle to resist sin is universal. Hebrews 2:18 offers readers a word of comfort for times when temptation seems too difficult to overcome.

The teaching is that because Jesus endured temptation, he knows how to help us in our temptations. Of course, as God, he is perfect and would be able to help us with temptation regardless. Yet in his humanity, he shared in our human experiences and has suffered just as we often do.

Jesus is not a far-off deity unconcerned with his creation. Rather, he is intimately acquainted with the human condition and desires to help. The question is not whether he cares, but whether we will receive his care. If you are in a spiritual battle today, remember–Christ’s is there and can provide strength in your time of need.
