1 John 3: What Love Is

1 John 3: What Love Is November 23, 2011

“16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” -1 John 3:16-18

Love has as many definitions as there are people in the world. We love God, yet also love pancakes. How does our Creator define love?

Jesus showed his love for us by giving up his life on our behalf. John wrote that we are to do the same to show our love. Specifically, he called those with the ability to meet physical needs for others to do so. At this time of year, these words can especially apply. Let us not love simply by our prayers or our words, but by acting to serve the needs of those around us.

Serving those in need is how we show the love of Christ within us.
