Now if you think about awards that can be given out, um for different things, I don’t often win when it comes to awards . . .

Shelley suggests a change in the order of service so that I could surprise everyone with communion, and she counted the cups.

Portion from the sermon

Now if you think about awards that can be given out, um for different things, I don’t often win when it comes to awards . . .

vi. and I may not win a Barnabas Award here today for my Syrian translation.

a But I would like to suggest something.  I believe Barnabas can be translated “Son of Encouragement.”

b Now let me go a step further with that.  What if one form of prophecy is encouragement?

  • What if one form – maybe not all forms of prophecy, but he’s the son of a prophet – what if one form of prophecy is encouragement?

c If it is, if, then anyone can prophesy, anyone can encourage . . . anyone.

  • Look at your neighbor and say, “That means you.”
  • I didn’t see anyone look at your neighbor.
  • Where’s Mr. Rogers when you need him?  All right . . . he was an encourager.  There’s no doubt about that, all right.

d So . . . beyond all that Barnabas isn’t his given name.  Barnabas is his Christian name, given to him by The Twelve, given to him by the very Apostles.

vii. Some of you right now, probably are sitting there in your pews, and you’re scanning through stories in Acts of Barnabas in your minds.  I can just see the list, just going down, all the references to Barnabas.

a Many of you don’t even need your Bibles at all to think about Barnabas.

b Just consider this, Barnabas is ALL ABOUT encouraging the downcast.  That’s all he’s about.

  • Well, you may ask, “Pastor, Teacher,” whatever you want to call me.  “Well, what about the time” – and I know you’re going to want to correct me afterwards – “Well, what about the time when Barnabas confronts Mark about Paul in Acts 15?  Isn’t Barnabas wrong because he confronts Paul?”
  • Well, Paul confronts Peter.  Peter doesn’t have any trouble, even confronting Jesus.[3]
  • Are they all wrong?
