Just be real…
You don’t reach the lost by denying the truth.
I don’t really like the phrase: “if you’re too heavenly minded then you’re of no earthly good.”
I understand the sentiment of it, but it really couldn’t be further from the truth.
Everything I do, think, and see is through a biblical worldview, so of course, I’m thinking about things above.
I’m ALSO really thinking about earthly good.
I’m thinking about how I can impact the people around me for Jesus.
I am thinking about being kind to the cashier at Walmart.
I’m thinking about being an example to my children.
I’m thinking about how I can best love my wife.
I am thinking about how I can help those less fortunate than myself.
As long as I’m on earth, I want to do and show good to the people around me.
But… there is a reason someone initially said those words.
Some people are so hyper-spiritual that you can’t have a real conversation with them…
Me: How are you doing?
Them: I’m blessed and highly favored. I’m the head and not the tail. I’m the victor and not the victim.
Me: Huh? Didn’t your transmission just blow out? Seriously, how are you? It’s alright to cut the Christianese and be real; it’s not an indictment against God to say how you feel.
Them: You’re warring against my spirit…
Me: Ok…
This mindset doesn’t advance the kingdom. It makes you look weird.
It also denies large portions of Scripture.
We do have emotions.
We do grieve.
And we do get sad.
We do get mad.
We do have horrible days.
You don’t need to cover up your feelings with hyper-spiritual jargon.
I know what you mean, but does someone who needs to meet Jesus know what you mean? Probably not.
Be real.
When I ask how you’re doing, just say it.
Then we have a starting point and if life is rough, we’ll know what to pray for…
What you’re sometimes saying is not what they’re hearing:
They might hear this:
You’re denying that your arm is broken even though you’ve got a cast?
Why you saying there’s nothing wrong?!?
What do you mean you’re soaked in blood from a sheep and you were set on fire in your church?
Did you call the police?
Where are your burns?
Someone paid for you with blood? That’s creepy.
Why you blowing that old goat horn at me?
What language is that? I only speak English…
Yes, I know what those things mean, and no, I’m not being disrespectful…
I’m saying to meet people where they’re at and be a real person and when they ask how you’re doing, just be honest… after all, the Bible teaches against lying…
Just be real… and just share what Jesus has done for you.
You don’t reach the lost by denying the truth.
Take it or leave it…
Love, blessings, and peace… PB.
