Demons. Codependent demons. I am always trying to hide from them but recently, I prayed a prayer that God is answering abundantly: I asked Him to release the champion within me, to bring her out and let her shine the way He intended.  I knew it would be painful and a little scary.  Like trusting a friend to lead you blindfolded down a steep flight of stairs.  But I also know my God is trustworthy.  I work very hard every day to protect my heart.  Jesus... Read more

Flowers make me happy. It’s been a while since I’ve written — Holy cow have I been busy. And failing. Utterly failing at so many things I set out to do since the last time we chatted here on the blog. Do you have your coffee? I usually have my coffee when I write, or, on the rare occassion that I’m writing in the afternoon, a cup of blueberry tea. So grab your java or herbal and park a seat.... Read more

Today in my prayer time, I had a crazy-radical thought. I was lamenting to God about the state of the world today. It’s so screwed up beyond belief and I am terrified at what I see happening in our country and around the globe. ISIS is bad enough; but when the president of one of the largest Christian universities encourages violence and bigotry, something is crazy wrong. And worse, we’re playing right into the hands of ISIS, who seem to be... Read more

I have the privilege of knowing people who are far more interesting than I, and one of them is stirring up a boat-load of controversy in Iowa. Specifically, the furor is over the poster she uses to promote the one-woman show she wrote called Truth Values: One Girl’s Romp Through M.I.T.’s Male Math Maze.  Even more specifically, people are upset about her shoes. Her (gasp!) leopard print shoes. Gioia DeCari is a professional artist I call my friend. She was also... Read more

I know the moment it happened. I can pinpoint the time in my life when unhealthy relationships were formed. It all started with an argument. I sat underneath our dining room table (kinda like the character Niles on Fraiser who found solace underneath the piano) and listened to them go round after round. It wasn’t long after this last bout that my sister, my mom and I walked into the house after another ordinary, typical day and the house seemed... Read more

They took my master, and I don’t know where they put him. I can hear the desperation, the last-straw emotion in Mary Magdalena’s voice. Dawn had finally come — finally! Saturday was over, and finally she could go and care for her Lord, she could serve him one last time. I imagine the hope-dread with which she faced this task of embalming Jesus. The way she could not wait to hold his hand — even cold — one more time. The... Read more

Not much is said in the Bible about the Saturday in between Jesus’ death and the Sunday of his resurrection. All we know is that because it was the Sabbath, the disciples rested quietly, as was the law. It’s as though the Gospel writers just couldn’t wait to get to the good stuff. I wish there were more to the story, although I know if we had it, it might not be as wonderful because Jesus would not be in... Read more

Good Friday. It’s the day that all the horrible things that people can do to each other — all the bombings, the lynchings, the 9-11’s. The calling of names, the abandonments. The unforgiveness and the betrayals — they all culminate, into and onto one innocent man. It’s on this day that all hope was seemingly lost — friends denied, lots were cast, the tomb undeniably closed. It represents the darkest throes of humanity, the deepest place to which we can... Read more
