Dinner with Demons?

Dinner with Demons?

“No, but I do say that what they sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. I do not want you to participate with demons! You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot share in the Lord’s table and the table of demons. Or are we provoking the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?”
(1 Corinthians 10:20–22, HCSB)
When we get involved in idolatrous practices or things which draw us away from God, we need to be careful. Paul says that a Christian cannot have dinner with God one day and then dinner with demons the next. The result of this hypocrisy is that God will get jealous and He will get angry with the way we are acting.
What is the cup of demons? When one makes an idol of something that opposes God and tries to replace God is a tool of demons. When I participate in something that is unholy I need to be careful because I am walking into a trap. This trap is set by Satan, but it releases other consequences from God.
There is a clear contrast between sharing the “cup of Christ” and the “cup of demons.” There is a clear difference between eating at the “Lord’s table” and the “table of demons.” Having dinner with someone is the ultimate expression of spending time with someone. In other words, one cannot spend time with demons and expect to be able to enjoy time with Jesus. They are in clear opposition to one another. The fellowship with demons will inhibit the enjoyment of a Christian’s fellowship with Christ. A Christian cannot consume food that is served by demons and expect to savor the food that is served by Christ. Idolatry will prevent a Christian from submitting to Christ.
