Lenten Reflection #20: Jesus Examines

For I am not conscious of anything against myself, but I am not justified by this. The One who evaluates me is the Lord.
(1 Corinthians 4:4, HCSB)

Like a medical examiner, Jesus examines me. He evaluates me and my motives. He searches my heart. He looks into my soul. He does more than a surgeon who cuts open the physical body to diagnose and make repairs. Jesus cuts through with the Holy Spirit to examine what is inside me. Many people don’t want this intrusion into their lives. However, Jesus will do it from time to time. When Paul was talking to the Corinthians, he said that he didn’t see anything wrong with himself. He also couldn’t take anyone else’s word for what is right or wrong with him. Instead, Paul would let Jesus do the spiritual medical examination.

We are told to go to a doctor for regular checkups from time to time. We go see a doctor because we want to know what is wrong, or if we are still in good shape. The checkups allow us to see if there is a problem that needs to be addressed. Have you gone in to see Jesus? Has He done an exam on you lately? Will you let Him?
