Focus on Your Life and Your Teaching

January 9, 2015 Year B

1 Timothy 4:16

Paul instructs Timothy to focus on two things: (1) his life and (2) the teaching of the Word. It is important as a pastor to have focus. Minds wander. Sin creeps in. Laziness can set in. So Paul instructs Timothy to keep it simple in his work.

There is a benefit to focus. It sharpens your skill and it helps you accomplish more. It also keeps your congregation and yourself free from the impact of future danger. As you focus, you can “keep the main thing the main thing” and you don’t get into too much trouble.

It also helps in getting the work of the ministry done. When the pastor is focused on things that other people should be doing, then busybodies can get themselves and the church into trouble. If the pastor is focused on the teaching and his spiritual condition, other people are forced to do what they should be doing. This can help grow the church.

Application: Keep my eyes on Jesus and focus on the main thing: personal growth, prayer, and preaching.

Prayer: God, help me keep focus and help me to keep the main thing the main thing. Thank You that You give me the privilege of a church to pastor.
