The scorn of the world hasn’t defeated Bristol Palin, and it looks like she just scored a big romantic win.

From her mother’s vice-presidential bid in 2008 to “Dancing With the Stars” to her own Lifetime reality-TV show until today, America has had a front-row seat to the saga of the single mother, daughter of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

It’s been a hard road for the 24-year-old, whose unplanned teen pregnancy became instant worldwide news when Sen. John McCain tapped her mother as his running mate — including the bizarre and cruel phenomenon of “Trig Trutherism,” in which people, such as blogger Andrew Sullivan, maintained that Bristol was actually the mother of Sarah Palin’s last child, Trig, despite Bristol having her own son, Tripp (both boys were born in 2008).

Tripp’s father, high-school hockey player Levi Johnston, first was engaged to Bristol, but after that broke up for good, he did his best to exploit his connection with the Palin family (aided and abetted by many in Hollywood and the media, especially comedian Kathy Griffin).

In the last few years, Bristol Palin has been going to school, working as a speaker for sexual responsibility and abstinence for teens, and raising her son in Alaska. She’s also been blogging at Patheos as part of the Family Channel, talking about “life, family and Alaska.”

Today, Saturday, March 14, she announced via Instagram and Facebook that she’s engaged to former Marine and Afghanistan War veteran Sergeant Dakota Meyer, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Ganjal in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, on Sept. 8, 2009.

He’s credited with saving the lives of 36 U.S. and Afghan troops pinned down in a Taliban ambush.

Palin captioned her social-media post (pictured above) with: “Truly the luckiest girl in the world; cannot wait to marry this man.”
