I love Divine Mercy Sunday. I love everything about it. In a sense, it is everything. Imagine for a moment if we were all beacons of Divine Mercy, showing mercy, piercing hearts with the Easter message with a smile or a word or an act. Our every word could open hearts to God’s merciful love. Christ longs for souls. If only each one of us realized it, felt His longing. Sr. Faustina sure did. A friend of mine describes himself... Read more

I love these words from Archbishop DiNoia’s Easter Vigil homily last week: “We see that no one has ever desired anything more than God desires to share the communion of His trinitarian love for us.” What more do we need to know? Obviously, there is much more, catechetically, much more of the depth of that love to be revealed to us in prayer and with others in service and self-giving. But, once we encounter that reality, once we go to... Read more

I wrote over on my mothership, National Review Online, today about the ridiculous but important controversy — a warning bell — at George Washington University over a chaplain at the Catholic Newman Center there who is, as it turns out, Catholic! He strives to preach and counsel and live according to Church teaching. My impression is he operates aflame with the wisdom of the Father, the love of Christ, and the Holy Spirit. It’s a Trinitarian encounter over at GW... Read more

Celebrating Easter, as we continue to, Pope Francis talks about Christ as a friend. This continues a main theme — perhaps the main theme — of Pope Benedict’s pontificate. He wanted us to know Jesus. This is even why he stepped aside. Ultimately the point of a pope is to point the world to Jesus Christ. He’s the only reason for any of this. He is the answer to the questions. He is the healer of hearts. He is our... Read more

This coming Sunday we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. This Holy Father’s pontificate thus far has been one long lead up to it, introducing the world to God’s mercy. This weekend he said: We are afraid of God’s surprises; we are afraid of God’s surprises! He always surprises us! Dear brothers and sisters, let us not be closed to the newness that God wants to bring into our lives! Are we often weary, disheartened and sad? Do we feel weighed down... Read more

From St. Josemaria Escriva: Let us say again, in word and in action: “Lord, I trust in you; your ordinary providence, your help each day, is all I need.” We do not have to ask God to perform great miracles. Rather, we have to beg him to increase our faith, to enlighten our intellect and strengthen our will. Jesus always stays by our side and is always himself. Ever since I began to preach, I have warned people against a... Read more

Holy Saturday. Would that every Saturday be! Every day. Today, these last few days, these coming Easter days are a chance to set things right, simply by orientating ourselves to God. Simply. It’s not that simple, is it? There are responsibilities and distractions. There’s a whole world out there with its demands. And yet it is. Pray for faith, and God will help. Let Him in. He wants to help. We stand as obstacles. And the world needs the love... Read more

The Order of Preachers — the Dominicans — help here. If you are looking for a way into the Passion today, this video beautifully illustrates the prayer of this day: Canticum de Passione Domini from Province of Saint Joseph on Vimeo. The text comes from Catherine di Ricci, a 16th-century Dominican saint from Italy, reflecting on Christ’s words on the Cross and our response. What He has done and what are we doing?! That’s why we have today and tomorrow,... Read more
