Just so you know: I am tucking this into my big fat manila file of Really Sad Stories.
A man in China has sued his ex-wife for giving birth to what he called an “incredibly ugly” baby girl.
“I married my wife out of love,” Jian Feng told the Irish Times. “But as soon as we had our first daughter, we began having marital issues. Our daughter was incredibly ugly, to the point where it horrified me.”
At first, Feng thought that his wife had been unfaithful and the baby wasn’t his—because he couldn’t imagine that he could have fathered an unattractive child.
When DNA testing proved that he was, in fact, the baby’s rightful father, he sued on the grounds of false pretenses. It seems that before they met, his wife, unbeknownst to him, had undergone extensive plastic surgery in South Korea. While she had once been homely, the surgery had transformed her into a beauty, someone he would be proud to be seen with in a public place.
Feng must have done a great job of explaining his humiliation, because the courts agreed with him. A judge has ordered his ex-wife to pay him the sum of $127,000.
I am reminded of a quote from Dorothy Parker:
“Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.”
By Parker’s standard, Jian Feng—unfit as a husband, unfit as a father—is the ugliest of all.
