Supreme Court Extends Injunction for Little Sisters of the Poor

Supreme Court Extends Injunction for Little Sisters of the Poor January 25, 2014

The Supreme Court has extended a stay imposed by Justice Sonia Sotomayor on December 31, which protected the Little Sisters of the Poor from crippling fines imposed by the Obama administration.

On Friday, January 24, the Supreme Court voted unanimously to prevent the Obama administration from enforcing a provision of the Affordable Care Act which would have required the religious order to provide contraceptive coverage for its employees, free of charge, or to authorize its insurance agency to offer such coverage.  Failure to comply by the January 1 deadline would have resulted in substantial penalties.
