It would be laughable, were it not so tragic. On October 5, 2010, President Obama signed into law S. 2781, “Rosa’s Law.” Introduced by Sen. Barbara Mikulski in 2009, Rosa’s Law changes references in many Federal statutes that currently refer to “mental retardation” to refer, instead, to “intellectual disability.” This is well and good. We will no longer use a term which has become demeaning to certain individuals who, through no fault of their own, have impaired learning skills. The... Read more
Look up, look around. That’s what we do, really, we Christians, during this Advent season. We look up to our heavenly Father, and to the Son Who came to us in Bethlehem as a tiny baby, and Who comes to us still today. And we look around at the world in which we live—at the still, expectant winter nights, rich with promise; and at the people whose love shapes us, and who we celebrate later this month with gifts... May he be faithful to the ministry that he receives from you, Lord God, and be to others a model of right conduct. –From the Prayer of Consecration, Rite of Ordination to the Priesthood On the day of his ordination, a young priest expects to offer a lifetime of loving service to Christ and His Church. Through his prayer and his ministry, he will lead his flock to a deeper understanding of their faith; he will walk with them in... Read more
Today at lunch, I strolled through the mall. Not too many shoppers, I noted, since it’s just a few weeks from Christmas! Maybe, in this down economy, they’re all at home baking cookies and knitting sweaters for their loved ones…. Then I saw it: Splayed prominently across a shop window in artificial spray snow were the words ‘SEASONS GREEDY!’ “Nah,” I thought. “Surely they can’t be that ready to admit that it really is about making money!” Silly me! For... Read more
They say that there are two kinds of people in the world: those who always finish their sentences, and those * * * * * In our happy household, there is one of each kind. My husband always finishes his sentences. He also balances his checkbook, folds his t-shirts before stacking them neatly in the drawer, and backs into his parking space so the car will be ready to pull out in the morning. Me? I flit from one idea... Read more
IF YOU’RE A PARENT, you know it can happen. Your chubby little Chad can be simply angelic, smiling and blowing kisses all through breakfast, but morph into “Chucky” just as the homily begins. Read more
Warning: This story is not nearly as interesting as it would have been just a few years ago. When I toured the Vatican Secret Archives in September 2004, the thousands of documents and historical artifacts housed therein were rarely seen by anyone but the Pope and his Curia, and Vatican scholars. Since that time, Rome has embraced the 20th century, and most of the collections housed in the Vatican Libraries, including the “Secret Archives,” have been made available on-line for... Read more

Today, I had intended to release the recipe for my husband’s homemade pumpkin pie. (Actually, it’s not originally Jerry’s recipe. Many years ago, listening to WJR Radio, he heard the chef from Greenfields Restaurant in Detroit discuss Thanksgiving desserts, and he copied the recipe and made it his specialty. Since Greenfields burned to the ground many years ago, I guess now Jerry is the “keeper of the secret recipe.”) However, we’ve moved since I last read the “secret recipe”; and... Read more
