INNER CIRCLE: Awakening To Reality

INNER CIRCLE: Awakening To Reality

Roman 8:8-11

“Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.  But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.” (NIV, emphasis mine)

For the Apostle Paul, writing several years before anyone would write any of the New Testament Gospels, the idea of Christ in us is a foundational concept. Christ, as he says to idol-worshipping pagans in Athens (see above), is “the One in whom we all live, and move, and have our being.”

Therefore, everyone, whether they realize it or not, is in Christ, and Christ is in them. This is central to Paul’s theology.

So, when he says, “You, however…are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you,” he’s not suggesting that it’s possible that God’s Spirit is not alive in us. He’s simply making the point that God’s Spirit is what connects us to Christ.

The evidence that we are all in Christ is that “Christ is the One in whom we all live, and move, and have our being,” as Paul says in Acts 17:22-28. So, if we have being; if we are alive; if we are moving, then Christ is the One who makes that possible.

Without Christ, nothing would live. Everything has its life in Christ. As written in Colossians:

“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” (v. 16-17)

In other words, only things that do not exist are outside of Christ. Realistically, there is nothing in the realm of reality that is not an expression of the essence of Christ.

Or, in Quantum terms, “Everything is an expression of the Quantum Field.” This is the basis for Quantum Field Theory which is supported by the notion that our Universe is a continuous, interconnected network of invisible fields rather than solid matter, where all particles are excitations of those fields. This science suggests that we live in a deeply connected universe. Some have phrased it this way: “The Quantum Field is everything, and everything is the Quantum Field.”

If there is an “If/Then” condition in Paul’s statement above, it’s one based on our awareness of Christ in all things, rather than on the reality of Christ in all things. The reality is that we live in a Christ-infused Universe. However, not everyone is aware of this reality. For those who are awakened to this Christness of all things, the Spirit of God is alive in them. Meaning, the Spirit is now at work in those who realize their Divine connection. These people have moved from “the realm of the Flesh” to “the realm of the Spirit.” They “belong to Christ” because they realize that Christ is in them, and in everyone, and everything.

This shift of awareness takes place in our minds, not in our bodies. We do not need to “invite Christ to live in us” for this to happen. We simply need to awaken to the reality that Christ is already living in us, and that we have always been living, and moving, and having our being in Christ.

To twist Paul’s words here into anything other than this is to embrace the lie of separation and the illusion of division; something that Paul, (as we shall soon see), argues strongly against.
