Romans 5:12; 15; 18-19:

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned…But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many…But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! (KJV, emphasis mine)

In these passages from Paul’s epistle to the Roman church, we have an encapsulated summary of his argument that what is true of Christ is true of all humanity. However, most Christians have missed the point due to what New Testament Greek scholar David Bentley Hart refers to as “one of the most consequential mistranslations in Christian history.”[1] Speaking of Romans 5:12, specifically, he means the phrase “whereupon all sinned” in the Latin Vulgate, which erroneously suggests that everyone is born already guilty in the eyes of God. As he explains:

“The most obvious…reading…is that, in this verse, (we have) a parallelism (something for which Paul has such a marked predilection) is given in chiastic form: just as sin entered into the cosmos and introduced death into all its members, so the contagion of death spread into the whole of humanity and introduced sin into all its members. This, as we see in Romans and elsewhere, is for Paul the very dynamism of death and sin that is reversed in Christ: by his triumphant righteousness, he introduced eternal life into the cosmos, and so as that life spreads into the whole of humanity, it makes all righteous.” (emphasis mine) [2]

The implications of this, and later verses referenced above, indicate Paul’s understanding that “just as the first sin brought condemnation and death to absolutely everyone, so Christ’s act of righteousness brings righteousness and life to absolutely everyone.[3]

For clarity, let’s look at how David Bentley Hart translates these same passages:

“Therefore, just as sin entered into the cosmos through one man (Adam), and death through sin, so also death pervaded all humanity, whereupon all sinned…As the transgression, however, not so the grace bestowed: for if by the transgression of one (Adam) the many died, so much more did God’s grace and the gift in grace of the one man Jesus the Anointed overflow to the many…So, then, just as by one transgression unto condemnation for all human beings, so also by one act of righteousness unto rectification of life for all human beings…For, just as by the heedlessness of the one man (Adam) the many were rendered sinners, so also by the obedience of the one (Christ) the many will be rendered righteous.” (DBH, emphasis mine)

Not only are these verses arguing for a Universal Reconciliation for all humanity, but they are also pointing us to the quantum entanglement of Christ and all humanity.

In other words, the universal nature of this reconciliation for all humanity points to the quantum reality of Christ at work in all creation. What is true of Christ is true of all of us.

As we shall see, Paul will continue to draw these parallels between Christ and Humanity in other writings, further developing his quantum theology of Christ in the earliest days of the Christian faith.

Next, we’ll examine Romans 6:4-8; 10-11.
