Catholic Priest first COVID-19 case in Peru

Catholic Priest first COVID-19 case in Peru 2020-03-13T14:11:20-05:00

Father Luis Núñez del Prado, a priest of the Diocese of Lurin in Peru, is the first person diagnosed with coronavirus in Peru.  He worked very closely with my mother over several years when she was in the finance council of her parish in Lurin.  I had the opportunity to meet the forty-seven year old priest many times, and in 2012, the Knights of Columbus Council #677 from Augusta, Georgia, gifted him a chalice.

Father Núñez del Prado is currently hospitalized in downtown Lima and is in critical care.  He is suffering from pneumonia and is intubated.  Diagnosed last week with tonsillitis, he sought emergency care earlier this week when he could not breathe.  In between both medical visits, he continued regular pastoral care in his parish located in the southern district of Lima called Villa María del Triunfo.

Father Luis has not traveled abroad, meaning he contracted the virus from someone within his parish.  I just heard that last Sunday he had lunch with sixteen families from his parish along with two Germans who were visiting.  All the families have been quarantined.

A false alarm yesterday evening stated Father Luis had died.  This is not true, but he is in a very delicate condition.

Prayers for him, his family, and his parishioners.
