4.    Jesus is going to do great things with you if you let him, and if you don’t try to interfere with him.

We all experience some sort of suffering in our lives, and when it comes to divorce, the pain can become like a blinder that prevents you from believing you could ever be happy again. Many times, we are our own worst enemies because we constantly relive the stressful, hurtful moments of our encounters with our ex-spouses. Flashbacks of this sort, if you entertain them as often as they present themselves, will keep you steeped in pain and anchored in the past, unable to forgive or really move forward. Sometimes, flashbacks become “shields” for a hurting heart; almost as if a person clings tightly enough to the pain, they will never allow themselves to be hurt again. Some people, without even realizing it, feel that keeping pain fresh in their minds is a sure-fire way to avoid getting into other painful situations in the future, but doing so only prevents us from really experiencing healing.

Holding on to pain does not make you wiser, it only perpetuates your misery and blocks the way for God to heal you. You can begin getting rid of these obstacles by making the decision to forgive those who have hurt you and work on that forgiveness every day because it definitely is a process. Forgiveness opens the heart to God and gives him permission to begin the healing.
