In 24 days, American voters will go to the polls to elect the next President of the United States. As we all know, this is a big deal. The future of our country is at stake in more ways than one. Unlike other countries, Americans are given the freedom to choose our leaders, and we must take advantage of this right while we still can. The most disappointing voting bloc in the United States belongs to the group of Americans who consider themselves Christians. So, today I am talking to you, my fellow believers in Christ. Here are 4 reasons why Christians must vote.

According to a survey done by PRRI in 2023, 66% of Americans identify themselves as Christians. That equates to approximately 220 million people. Can you imagine the positive change in the moral culture of America if every self-proclaimed Christian voted?
This is not an article telling you who to vote for – that decision is yours. This article is simply going to outline WHY it is important that you DO vote. I have heard many Christians say that they are going to sit this one out and honestly, that makes no sense to me. The truth is, Christians making the decision not to vote has been an issue for years. Why is that? It’s a privilege to vote, and everyone should take that privilege seriously. (More on this below).
No Candidate is Perfect
It’s important to note right off the bat that there has never been or ever will be a perfect candidate. There will never be a perfect President of the United States. Perfect people do not exist. We are all imperfect people trying to do the best we can. Only one person in the history of the world was perfect and His name is Jesus Christ.
We know that Jesus was perfect because the Bible tells us so. In Hebrews 7:26 we read: “For such a High Priest [Jesus] was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens.” And 2 Corinthians 5:21 tells us that “For He [God] made Him [Jesus] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” These two verses inform us of the sinless life that Jesus lived and only HE can claim perfection.
Think about what that means. It means that no matter what man or woman runs for office, there will always be imperfections. Every candidate is a sinful person – we all are. Every one of us has done things that God does not approve of. In fact, if any of us are without sin, Jesus said we should “cast the first stone” (John 8:7). But, no one can cast the first stone because we all have a sinful past. We have all done things that go against God’s standards.
For this reason, we need to consider what each candidate has done for the country. We must consider the successes and failures of each candidate. We can’t vote on based on our feelings – whether good or bad. We also cannot be single issue voters. Every issue must be considered. Again, there will never be a time where we will have a perfect leader, until Jesus rules in the Millennial Kingdom. So, what do we do?
Important Reminders…
Before we get into the reasons why Christians should vote, I have a few reminders that are very important points to consider.
First, we must remember where we live. Although our home is in Heaven, we are currently living in a sinful, fallen world. There will never be a time on Earth as we know it, where sin does not exist. Murder, theft, cheating, backstabbing – every sin will exist until Jesus returns. That is a fact. We must recognize and accept that we are living in an imperfect world where sin will always exist.
Second, we must also remember that we are voting for the “President of the United States” not the “Pastor of the United States.” It is not the job of the president (or the government for that matter) to see to it that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is taught around the country. Although it would be wonderful to have a candidate to do so, the job of spreading the Good News was given to followers of Jesus Christ.
Jesus tells us in Matthew 28:19-20 to “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you.” Jesus didn’t say that evangelism was up to leaders, He said it was up to US, His followers.
Finally, we must always remember that we will never find true hope in any leader. In 1 Timothy 1:1 the Apostle Paul says that JESUS is our hope. When we realize that our hope is found in Jesus alone, it makes voting for an imperfect person much easier. The truth is, Christians must choose the candidate that aligns MOST with the values we hold dear. The values that are taught in the Word of God. 4 Reasons Why Christians Must Vote
There are several reasons why Christians must vote, but here we will cover four of them without discussing any of the current issues. All these reasons for voting are based on Biblical principles and the truth of God’s Word.

The choice not to vote is giving permission for the godless to make the choices for you.
I want you to really understand why this is so important. Today, we are in the midst of a huge moral decline in America. Right is wrong and wrong is right. Things that we thought would never happen are happening right out in the open for everyone to see. If Christians don’t vote, we are letting those who know NOTHING about God’s standards make the rules and decisions of what is acceptable and what is not acceptable.
We cannot sit back and let immorality be the accepted principle in our country. When we choose not to vote, our choice, in and of itself, is a choice. That choice is to let those who do not follow the Lord make decisions for what is acceptable. And I promise you, those decisions will never meet God’s standards.

It is our duty to God and country.
Whether non-believers want to accept it or not, America was founded on GODLY principles. All we have to do is read the Declaration of Independence to find this truth. It states:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Our Founding Fathers risked their lives to make America a sovereign nation and to fight for what they believed in. When we sit on the sidelines or remove ourselves from the voting process, we are disrespecting those who fought for the founding of this county. At the same time, we are also disrespecting those who gave up their lives for our freedom, including our freedom to vote. But most importantly, we are disrespecting our Creator, the Lord God Almighty, who blessed us with citizenship in the greatest country in the world.
Perhaps Christians who refuse to vote are lacking the gratitude they should have for being an American and for having the freedoms God has given them through their American citizenship.

We cannot affect the culture of a nation without the right people in place.
If Christians don’t participate in the vote, we cannot affect change. However, we must understand that change occurs in small steps. Aside from the Lord stepping in and making drastic changes all at once, we will only see small increments of change – but we have to be active in the process.
Christians must use our influence to choose leaders. Imagine if the 220 million professing Christians in America actually went to the ballot box. Can you see a future where Christian values are the norm and not frowned upon? If we would just vote, that vision could become a reality.
Let’s be honest, we’re talking about moral decency; we’re not talking about pushing a “religion” on the country. God gave humanity the free will to choose who they will worship, but that doesn’t take away what should be considered right and wrong. We’ve come to the point where political correctness and ideology has superseded morality. Christians have the opportunity to positively affect what is acceptable in society. BUT…if you don’t vote, it doesn’t really matter what you want.
This brings us to the last of the reasons why Christians must vote….

Silence is approval. Approval is sin.
For too long Christians have remained silent. We have stayed in the background and allowed our country to fall into a tailspin of sin and debauchery. We have decided that “taking the high road” is the best defense. Well, look where our silence has brought us.
We now have the decay of the family, church attendance is at its lowest in history, children are being sexually exploited and deciding to change their genders, and really, “anything goes.” There are no limits to what is acceptable today.
Our silence has been the permission for the pagan world to make our choices for us. I don’t know about you, but I am NOT okay with that. I certainly don’t want those who do not know God be the ones making decisions for those of us who do know Him and love Him.
There is a verse in Romans that should hit every Christian very hard. The background of this verse is important. In Romans 1:18-32 Paul lists everything that is unacceptable to the Lord – things which are an abomination to Him. It is in verse 32 that Paul hits home:
“[Those] who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things [as mentioned in the previous verses] are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.”
This verse is a warning for those who KNOW the righteous decree of the Lord which says: those who do evil are deserving of death. If they continue to do these things OR if someone approves of these things being done, they are just as GUILTY of sin as those who practice the sin. This is where our silence equates to approval. In other words, if we don’t speak out we are giving our approval, which in turn is sinful.
There are several verses of scripture that relate to Romans 1:32. Two of them are 1 Corinthians 13:6 which tells us that love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth and James 4:17 which warns that it is a sin to know what we ought to do and then not do it.

There’s No Excuse Not to Vote
I know that it’s hard for many Christians to cast a vote for someone that they believe is morally inept. And I get it. However, look at the history of the world. God uses imperfect people to fulfill His perfect plan – and He always has. The Bible is filled with people that God raised up to complete His purpose. God used adulterers, murderers, drunkards, and cowards, just to name a few.
If you are struggling with making the decision to vote in this election, consider the following questions:
- Will you stand up for the righteousness of God or will you remain silent (by not voting)?
- Do you realize that if you don’t vote, you are saying that you DO NOT approve of GOD’S choices for candidates? (See Romans 13:1-7)
- Have you made your voice clear that you don’t agree with what’s happening in our country or have you just accepted the current state of morality as “the norm”?
- Do you believe that God would want you to sit on the sidelines and not take part in His plan?
- Do you really want those who do not know the Lord or even dare to acknowledge Him to continue to make your choices for you?
This November 5th I pray that you will make the decision to raise your Christian voice and stop sitting in the background waiting for God to intervene on our behalf. We have got to STAND UP and STAND FIRM. Christians MUST choose the lesser of two evils, if we don’t, the world will choose the greater evil.
