Progressive Christianity is an evolving, socially engaged expression of faith that reinterprets doctrine to fit today’s culture. It prioritizes compassion and social justice, embraces diversity and spiritual exploration, and often redefines key Biblical concepts to align with its inclusive worldview. Progressive Christianity teaches a different Gospel than what the Bible teaches.

The Dangers of Progressive Christianity
Progressive Christianity has been gaining influence in recent years, and at first glance it sounds appealing. It emphasizes love, tolerance, inclusivity, and social justice. This movement encourages Christians to question long-held values and traditions, to cultivate compassion, and to prioritize social causes.
While these ideas may seem admirable on the surface, beneath them lies a very different gospel than the one revealed in Scripture. Progressive Christianity redefines Jesus, the Bible, sin, and salvation itself, while offering a false hope that ultimately leads people away from the truth of God’s Word and tragically, toward eternal separation from Him.

The Bible: Human Words or God’s Word?
Progressive Christians often claim that the Bible is simply a collection of ancient writings, shaped by flawed people, riddled with cultural bias, and open to re-interpretation.
However, the Bible itself declares:
- “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16–17).
- “The entirety of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.” (Psalm 119:160).
God’s Word is not a book of evolving opinion – it is eternal truth spoken by Almighty God Himself, transcribed by His chosen prophets and remains relevant today.

Who Is Jesus?
In Progressive Christianity, Jesus is often reduced to a moral example. He is downgraded to a revolutionary who showed love, acceptance, and inclusion rather than His true divine nature. His miracles, resurrection, and divinity are sometimes treated as symbolic stories rather than historical facts.
However, the Bible leaves no room for that view:
- “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” (John 1:1,14).
- “And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!” (1 Corinthians 15:17).
Jesus is not merely a teacher or a prophet – He is God in the flesh, risen from the dead and alive today at the right hand of God (Hebrews 12:2).

What Is Sin?
In Progressive Christianity circles, sin is often redefined, relabeled or even dismissed altogether. Instead of calling out sin for what it is – rebellion against God – sin is repackaged with softer, more “acceptable” labels:
- “Women’s healthcare” → a phrase used to cover abortion, the murder of innocent life
- “Living your truth” → elevates personal thoughts and feelings over God’s absolute truth
- “Self-love” or “self-care above all” → disguises selfishness and pride as virtue
- “Inclusion” → often used to mean affirming lifestyles and choices God calls sin
- “Love is love” → used to justify unbiblical sexual relationships
This rebranding makes sin sound compassionate, acceptable or progressive, but it does not change the reality of what God calls it.
The Bible tells a completely different story:
- “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23).
- “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9).
Sin is universal, personal, and deadly serious — and it requires forgiveness, not redefinition.

What Saves Us?
Progressive Christianity teaches that salvation is about becoming one’s authentic self, making the world a better place, and/or recognizing the divine spark within oneself. Many even teach universalism, the belief that all paths lead to God and no one is truly lost.
But Jesus Himself says the opposite:
- “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” (John 3:36)
- “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)
Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. There is no other way to get to Heaven.

The Cross: Love or “Divine Child Abuse”?
One of the most striking rejections within Progressive Christianity is its view of the cross. Many progressives argue that the doctrine of substitutionary atonement is cruel and unloving. They reject the teaching that Jesus bore God’s wrath in our place – that Jesus paid our sin debt in full. They claim that the cross portrays God as an abusive Father who demanded the violent death of His Son before He could forgive. Some even call it “divine child abuse.”
This language gained traction in the early 2000s when liberal theologian Steve Chalke used it in his book The Lost Message of Jesus (2003). In later writings and interviews, he continued to argue against substitutionary atonement, and many Progressive churches have since echoed this claim.
But this perspective ignores the heart of the gospel:
- Jesus’ sacrifice was voluntary. He was not forced to die against His will. “No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My Own accord.” (John 10:18)
- The cross was an act of perfect love. Far from abuse, it was the united plan of the Father, Son, and Spirit to save sinners. “God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.” (2 Corinthians 5:19)
- God’s justice was satisfied. Sin demands judgment, but Jesus took our punishment so we could be forgiven. “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)
The cross is not cosmic cruelty or divine child abuse – it is God’s love and justice coming together in one moment. Jesus willingly endured the wrath that WE deserved so that we could experience the mercy that cannot be earned or bought.

God’s Moral Standards
In Progressive Christianity, moral boundaries are flexible. As stated previously, in Progressive Christianity, sin does not exist as the Bible defines it. To progressives, what used to be called sin is often repackaged with appealing, more acceptable words.
No matter how culture tries to rename or soften sin, it doesn’t change God’s standards. We don’t get to decide what’s right and wrong. God, as Creator, has already spoken and laid out HIS standards. His Word is the final authority. Our opinions, feelings, or cultural shifts cannot rewrite His commands.
The Bible says:
- “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8).
- “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts…” (Romans 1:26–27).
God’s standards are not cruel, outdated, or optional; they are perfect, holy, and given for our good. The question isn’t whether we agree with Him, but whether we will submit to Him – therein lies the dilemma. So, the thought is: if sin is redefined, then there is no accountability for the sins we commit – we can just do whatever we please because God won’t judge. But this thought process could not be farther from the truth.
Hell and Judgment
Progressive Christianity often denies hell, claiming that a loving God would never judge or condemn. But the Bible warns us clearly:
- “And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (Matthew 25:46).
- “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27).
Hell is real. Ignoring it doesn’t erase the fact that it exists not just for Satan and his demons, but for those who reject Jesus Christ. Going to hell is OUR choice, not God’s.

The Gospel: Good News or Good Vibes?
Progressive Christianity redefines the Gospel through inclusion, affirmation, and social activism. But the true gospel is not about what we do – it’s about what Christ has done.
- “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” (Romans 1:16).
- “…Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and He was buried, and He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.” (1 Corinthians 15:3–4).
The gospel is the story of the life and ministry, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus came so that we may live. He died in our place. That is the only good news that saves.
Final Word
Progressive Christianity promises freedom but delivers confusion and although it may sound compassionate, it actually replaces God’s truth with human opinion. It offers a false gospel that cannot save.
The Bible warns us plainly:
- “But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1:8).
True Christianity is not about rewriting the gospel to fit our culture. It’s about surrendering to the unchanging truth of Jesus Christ, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
An Invitation to the Reader
If you’ve been wrestling with questions about faith, or if you’ve been drawn toward the ideas of Progressive Christianity, let me encourage you today: there is only one Gospel that saves.
Jesus Christ loves you so much that as a result, He died for your sins, was buried, and rose again so you could have eternal life. He doesn’t just offer inspiration, He offers forgiveness, a new life, and a secure future with Him.
The Bible says:
- “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9).
Salvation cannot be bought or earned and you don’t have to reinvent truth to receive it. You simply have to believe in Jesus, repent of your sins, and receive His gift of grace.
If you’ve never done that, today can be the day. Don’t settle for a false gospel that cannot save. Trust in the One who gave His life for you and rose again to give you eternal life.
Blessings,
Amy
