Illness can shake us to the core. Whether it’s a diagnosis that takes your breath away or the slow ache of watching someone you love suffer, sickness has a way of reminding us how fragile life really is. Yet for those who belong to Christ, illness – no matter how devastating – is never the end of the story. As hard as it may be, Christians face cancer and extreme illness with faith, hope and prayer.

My Personal Experience
In May 2020, my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. My first reaction after crying was to pray (which I continued to do throughout her entire illness). Then I began searching for every possible way I could help her.
By October 2022, my mom had grown very tired. She wasn’t giving up; she simply knew the inevitable was coming. With courage and at peace, she signed herself up for hospice and went home to spend her last days with family.
For 43 days, my dad, sister, and I cared for mom around the clock. Every day, we did everything we could to keep her comfortable and surrounded by love. Personally, without my faith in the Lord, it would have been unbearable to watch my mother suffer and ultimately succumb to her illness. However, I saw many miracles happen during those 31 months. I know without a doubt that the Lord was with my mom and us every step of the way.

The God Who Heals: Jehovah Rapha
In Exodus 15:26, God reveals Himself as Jehovah Rapha, “The Lord who heals you.”
“If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight… I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.” (Exodus 15:26)
This name, “Jehovah Rapha” doesn’t simply describe that God is able to heal; it reveals the very nature of who He is. Healing flows from His character. Every act of restoration, every moment of comfort in times of pain, every remission or recovery are glimpses of Jehovah Rapha at work.
But what about the times when the healing doesn’t come or when the treatment fails?
When Healing Comes Through Heaven
Christianity doesn’t deny the pain of sickness or the grief of loss. Even Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus (John 11:32-36). But Scripture reminds us that physical death is not defeat for the believer in Christ, it’s the doorway to complete healing.
“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain…” (Revelation 21:4)
For some, healing does come in this life on earth. For others, like my mother, healing comes the moment they step into eternity, when they are finally free from pain and disease. The world sees that as loss, but heaven calls it restoration.

God’s Sovereign Timeline
One of the hardest truths for our human hearts to grasp is that every person has an appointed time known only to God. “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27)
We don’t control the date of our birth or the moment of our death. Both belong to the Author of Life, Jesus Christ. In Psalm 139:16, David wrote,
“Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.”
Cancer cannot shorten a life that God has numbered. No doctor, diagnosis, or disease can overrule His sovereign timeline for our lives. The truth of this fact brings peace when everything else feels uncertain.
When we realize our days are in God’s hands, fear begins to lose its grip. What once felt like chaos becomes covered in peace, because we know the Author of our story is also the Finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
Faith in the Fire
When believers face sickness, the question should not be “Why me?” but rather, “What will God reveal through this?” Remember, our faith is refined in suffering.
In James 1:2-3 we are reminded: “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.”
Through the trials of illness, God draws His children closer. He teaches us dependence, compassion, and give us an eternal perspective. Cancer and extreme illnesses become not just a battle, but a testimony where God’s glory can be seen even in weakness and hard times of suffering.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
In every season of sickness, prayer is our lifeline. Even when the situation looks hopeless, never stop praying. God always hears, even when the answer doesn’t come the way we hoped.
Sometimes God heals instantly; other times He strengthens us to walk through the valley. But every prayer matters. It’s in those quiet, tearful moments of surrender that we draw closest to His heart. Prayer doesn’t just change circumstances, it changes us. And while His answers may not always look the way we imagined they would, they are always rooted in His perfect love and wisdom.
“The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth.” (Psalm 145:18)

When Death Is Not the End
For those who do not know Christ, death feels like a thief. But for believers, death has been defeated. The Apostle Paul asks in 1 Corinthians 15:55 – “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” Because of Jesus, the grave is no longer a final chapter, it’s a passageway home. To die in Christ is to truly live.
“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21)
For this reason, Christians have the ability to look at cancer and illness – not with fear, but with faith. Whether healing comes in this life or the next, the believer wins either way. The enemy loses his power when we realize that our lives are hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3).
I want to point out however that these promises are not for everyone. They only apply to those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ. Heaven is not the automatic destination of all people, it is the eternal home promised to those who have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ.
God loves everyone, but His promise of eternal life is reserved only for those who belong to Him. If you haven’t yet trusted Jesus as your Savior, today can be the day you receive that assurance.

Hope for the Journey
If you or someone you love is battling illness today, remember this:
- Jehovah Rapha still heals.
- God still reigns.
- Your story is not over.
- Death does not have the final word.
Even when the body fails, the spirit can flourish. Even when hope feels fragile, eternity is secure. As long as you have breath, God has purpose. And when your breath ceases, His promises continue.
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases.” (Psalm 103:2–3)
In the end, our comfort comes not from knowing when we will be healed, but from knowing Who holds the power to heal, and Who will hold us forever.

Call to Action
No one knows what tomorrow will bring. Illness, tragedy, and loss remind us how delicate life really is. But these things also point out what truly matters: where we’ll spend eternity.
If you don’t know Jesus as your Savior, today is the time to make that right. The same God who heals the body longs to heal your soul. He is Jehovah Rapha, the Lord who heals. The greatest healing He offers is forgiveness and eternal life through His Son, Jesus.
“And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.” (1 John 5:11)
You can know peace right now by calling on the Name of Jesus, confessing your sin, and asking Him to be Lord of your life. When you know where you’re going when you die, fear loses its power, hope becomes unshakable, and faith finds its anchor in Jesus Christ.
Blessings,
Amy
