What film is this half-shot from? The winner will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine. HINT: The film was in color, not black and white. I couldn’t find a color-version of this shot. Read more

As tired as I am of the Brokeback Mountain and Chronicles of Narnia debates, and as uninterested as I am in the Munich debate, I find myself almost nostalgic for The Passion of the Christ. So my question for the day is this… If someone were to pick up where Mel Gibson left off and direct the next ambitious New Testament film… who should direct it? Mel Gibson looks like he’s going to be busy for a while, what with... Read more

If you like animation, fairy tales, or good strong comedy, Hoodwinked! is well worth seeing. I interviewed writer/director Cory Edwards, and was mightily impressed by his talent and his conviction about making great entertainment for all ages. His Christian faith is clearly the foundation of his desire for excellence, and this is a startling debut, funnier than the Shrek movies and perfectly cast with great voice actors like Patrick Warburton, Andy Dick, and Jim Belushi. When I saw the film... Read more

One of my favorite film writers, Michael Leary, who blogs at ImageFacts, sees more of the international highlights than I do, partly due to living between Chicago and Scotland. Thus, I’ve been eagerly awaiting his Top Ten list, and here I am, reading it at The Matthews House Project and taking notes for future DVD rentals… I haven’t seen the film he put at #1. Read more

(Thanks to Peter T. Chattaway for noting this so quickly.) A movie that gives audiences the opportunity to watch human beings tortured, decapitated, having their throats cut, their heads smashed in, parts of their body chopped up and thrown in a furnace, shot point blank, their eyes dangling from their sockets and eventually cut (to relieve the pain), poked full of holes with a drill, having digits snipped off, throwing themselves in front of trains, having their chest cavities opened... Read more

Loved this quote: Tom Shales, The Washington Post, regarding the new television show The Book of Daniel: “I cannot recall a series in which a greater number of characters seemed so desperately detestable — a series with a larger population of loathsome dolts. There ought to be a worse punishment than cancellation for a show that tries this hard to be offensive and, even at that crass task, manages to fail.” Read more

I’ve had some interesting chats with the film writers and the editor of Christianity Today Movies in the wake of the publication of Lisa Cockrel’s Brokeback Mountain review. Mark Moring, the CT Movies editor, says he’s received over 250 e-mails about the Brokeback Mountain review. Many of them have expressed hatred toward homosexuals. And some of them have expressed hatred towards Christiainity Today for even reviewing the movie. (Some of them are posted here and more here.) But here’s something... Read more
