My Urban Garden: The one place I won’t let get all crazy

My Urban Garden: The one place I won’t let get all crazy May 27, 2015

Now I have four pots, filled with a colorful and succulent variety of lettuces, tomato plants, pansies, and marigolds. Two more even larger pots will be added as soon as we find drip trays that will fit under them so I don’t ruin the deck wood when I water (I’ve drenched the deck once already by zealously over-watering my little friends).

I like the mix of vegetables and flowers – something edible to nourish the body as well as something beautiful to nourish the mind and spirit. And I like the feel of the place.

I can be at peace there, and the loveliness of the new growth all around me reminds me of God’s goodness and grace. The fact that some of the plants will end up as sustenance reminds me of God’s providence and assurance that he will take perfect care of my family and me.

Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? (Mt 6:26)

The birds will be there, also, as they flutter around in the trees and land on the deck railing, chirping their joyful greetings. I want, or at least I hope, that I’ll grow spiritually along with my urban garden as it grows physically. I’ve got a lot to grow through these days, and so my little place away and yet not really away will give me the space in which I can do so.

My urban garden will be the one place where, with God’s help, things won’t get all crazy.
